I felt something die in me as he spoke. I tried to speak, but I could only stutter as I couldn't find any words.

“Relax, would you?” He laughed. I stared at him dejectedly, and he continued. “I also didn't say that I don't have feelings.”

“Then what the hell are you saying, Daniel?” I asked, trying hard to compress the budding hope in my voice. “Do you have feelings for me or not?"

“I believe… I do.” He smiled as he pulled into a parking space on the side of the street in front of my house.

He moved his head toward mine and gave me a gentle kiss on my lips. My body quivered with excitement. I pulled his head closer and bit on his lower lip. I moved my head back and savored the taste of his lips.

“It’s late, Daniel. I need to get some sleep.” I chuckled as I grabbed my bag from the backseat.

“Oh, of course, you should definitely get some sleep.” There was a definite edge to his voice, and I laughed again.

He drove off after we said our goodbyes and I walked into the house to find Cassie watching through the window.

“Some partner he is,” she teased.

“Why are you spying through the curtains?” I asked.

“Why did you not tell me things have gotten serious?” she accused.

“Have they?”

“Looks like it!” she screamed out.

“Okay, okay. I hear you,” I chuckled.

She started ticking numbers off on her hand.

“He went with you to see Jordan in the hospital. He dropped you off from work and not to mention you two sharing moments in his car! He is definitely in love with you.”

“Well, that’s not such a bad thing now, is it?” I teased, but my heart clenched at her words. He barely admitted to having feelings for me, and that was a far cry from love. Cassie was always so dramatic.

But I felt the hope in my heart grow.

Chapter 31

Amy

Thepasttwoweekshad been the busiest weeks of my life and I felt like I was literally about to die from the stress at work. The lab was bubbling even more than usual and our tests kept failing. But as scientists, we kept at it. Damien spent more time in the lab now because he was overseeing the chemical analysis and I was grateful for his expertise. He was so kind and gentle. He was clearly a rich kid, but besides his heartbreaking looks, there was nothing over the top about him.

“Damien, are the samples ready?”

“Not yet. Just give me a minute,” he smiled. He had a weird habit of smiling at whatever I said.

“Alright.” I turned to face the others. “Dr. Auburn?”

“Everything is ready over here,” she replied.

“Okay people, let’s do this,” I cheered. Their response was pretty low key because we all needed rest after all the hard work that had been done. Thankfully, this was the last batch for the day, and even with the minor setbacks we suffered, we were close. So fucking close.

“Another bust?” I asked.

“Well, we are short by thirty-three percent,” Damien said as he scanned the computer in front of him. Everyone cheered. It was understandable because this was the best result we had gotten so far.

“Congratulations everyone. We’ll go again tomorrow,” I applauded them as I walked into my office.

“Nice work out there,” Damien said, following me into my office.
