“Why, thank you. I owe it to you and your team,” I said as I sank into my chair. “I couldn't have gotten this far without the help.”

“Don’t be so modest,” he laughed. “Hey, I know you're really busy, but can I treat you to coffee tomorrow?”

“I don’t know Dam…”

“It will be quick. I will pick you up early and we'll just grab a cup of coffee.”

“You do realize that I have to be back here before nine, right?”

“We'll make it on time, I promise,” he said.

“Okay then,” I agreed hesitantly.

“Then, it's a date,” he said as he walked towards the door.

“Not a date,” I replied, trying not to sound too harsh. He laughed.

“Text me your address.”

Normally, Amelia Palmer would have been flattered by such an invitation, but not today. I even felt a rush of guilt flood my entire system just because I agreed to get coffee with him. Was it because of Daniel? He and I hadn’t even talked much since that night when he dropped me off at home. I thought I was busy, but he was even busier than I was. He was in Texas, and he had set up a lab there for some agricultural research. I had a nagging feeling that the research was because I was unable to produce substantial results that he could present to his stakeholders.

The ride home was a short one, but I still managed to fall asleep in the taxi. I walked up to the front porch and noticed that the door was unlocked, which was quite unusual, especially since Cassie was alone at home.

I walked in and noticed that all the lights in the living room were switched on. Cassie usually just left one on to save power. She always claimed to be an environmentalist, but I knew better. She just wanted to reduce the cost of the power bills.

“Cassie?” I called out. Maybe her boyfriend came over and they were busy upstairs. I decided to call her out again. “Cassie, where are you?”

“Hey, Amy,” a deep voice boomed behind me.

“Jesus!” I cried, placing my hand on my pounding chest.

“I’m sorry.” He laughed softly.

“What the hell is wrong with you, Daniel? You could have given me a heart attack,” I protested, but he kept on laughing, almost like he was mocking me.

“I just wanted to see you.”

“Of course, that's why you almost killed me with fear. How did you even get in?” I asked. Trying to quiet my thumping heart, I had to admit… he looked delicious. His thick hair begged for me to run my fingers through it and his face did a great job of hiding how tired he was. His black suit fit him perfectly.

“Cassie let me in.”

“Where is she?” I asked, as I set my bag on the kitchen table.

“She went out with Thomas. Cute couple. She said she’d be spending the night at his place.” He sat on the sofa, looking awfully comfortable.

“Why are you here, Daniel?” As much as I was happy to see him, it was time for him to let me know where his head was at when it came tous.

“What if I told you that I came because I wanted to know how far your research has gotten?” he asked, removing his tie and dropping it on the coffee table.

“I’d say that's a lie because you could always just ask me at the lab.” I sighed. “I thought you were still going to be in Texas for another week.”

“Oh, the research went better than expected, so I was able to leave early. I flew in from Texas this morning,” he replied as he took off his jacket and unbuttoned his shirt. I bit hard on my lower lip.

“And you just had to see me?”

“I just had to see you,” he said as he stood up and walked toward me. He got close, too close.

“What are you doing?” I asked, trying to sound as bold as I could.
