“No way. I really think I love her, man,” I said calmly. “Speaking of my exes, Jolene called me a few days ago when I was still in Texas.”

“This should be interesting,” he said as a wide grin appeared on his face.

“She said she had something important to discuss with me. Something she couldn’t tell me over the phone.”

“And?” he asked, tilting his head as he stressed the word.

“What do you mean?”

“Come on, we both know what happens when you and Jolene hook up.”

“Cut it out. She sounded really serious. It has to be something else,” I said, rubbing my chin.

“Maybe she wants to give you an invitation to her wedding then,” he laughed. “So, when are you hooking up with her?”

“Stop saying it like that,” I said as I shot him a wicked glance. I wanted to tell him about Anastasia too, but I felt it was better to keep him out of our family drama.

“When do you plan to tell the board about the contract?”

“I have a meeting scheduled with them in about ten minutes,” I said as I checked my phone.

“Okay, that's way sooner than I expected. Good luck.”

“I hope I won’t need it,” I replied.

The boardroom was a large room with a large oval table that complemented the entire room. A screen filled one wall. Files were evenly spaced on the table, indicating a particular seating arrangement.

I sat on my chair facing everyone and began the meeting.

The purpose of the meeting was to come up with something that would resolve the problem with the company's stocks. I proposed my idea and told them about Texas, the FDA and the research. They all seemed to buy it, all of them except Aaron Cooper.

I was satisfied by the presentation I had just given, a presentation to put the company back on track, and they had agreed for me to continue with my plans until he stood up to talk.

“What if it doesn’t work?” he asked with a devious look plastered on his face. “As it stands, we don't have actual evidence to show that this will help solve any problem. Not that I'm doubting your team or anything, but we have to wait a full year to have something to show. That's time we do not have. We need something now.”

The other board members chatted amongst themselves and it became clear they were considering that, too.

“We will go with our original plan. If it doesn’t work, we’ll release information about Dr. Palmer’s research,” I assured. The room went quiet.

Cooper adjusted his jacket and sat back down. “Well, that’s good enough for me.”

Chapter 33

Amy

Ihadstartedtoget used to the strain that these daily tests put on my mind and body. Softening the consequences with caffeine, I went on about my work like it was nothing. Everyone was so efficient and worked so hard and it gave me immense pride that I was their leader. I had to see to it that the hope they had in this research would yield results. We were almost there.

“What do we have, Damien?” I asked.

“We are about thirty-one percent short,” he answered. While two percent might not seem much to the outside, it was an admirable result in science and something to be proud of.

“At this rate, we should have something in about two to three weeks,” I applauded. They all cheered, more energetically than the day before. They were probably coping like I did, with coffee. I went back to my office where I finally had time to think about Daniel. I felt my skin tingle every time flashbacks of the previous night played in my head. The heat, the passion between the both of us, the thoughts made my head spin. Was there anything he wasn’t good at?

“Hey, Amy,” Damien said as he walked into my office.

“Damien, is everything alright?” I asked.

“Just wanted to apologize again for this morning.” Our meeting at the coffee shop was quite thrilling as we met his mother. She was a pretty woman, and she looked so young. Damien was probably in his thirties, too, so I thought it impossible for her to have birthed him. She almost looked as young as I did. She was a great conversationalist and was deeply interested in my work, which was surprising to me because I didn’t exactly take her as a woman who would be intrigued by science. There I go again with my crazy judgements that I was fighting against.
