“Oh, there is no need to apologize. It was wonderful meeting your mother.”

“It felt like she was interrogating you.” His hard look made it clear that he was serious about this.

“It’s okay, Damien. I didn’t see it that way. Besides, I'm more than happy to feed anyone’s curiosity concerning my work.”

“So, she didn’t bother you?”

“Not at all, Damien. I had a great time with your mother.” I laughed.

“Alright, I'm glad you had a good time. I'm heading home now, in case you need a ride,” he said.

“Thank you Damien, but I still have some work to wrap up here,” I lied. I was waiting to see Daniel. I couldn’t get him off my mind.

I went over to his office and, as luck would have it, he wasn’t around. He had left already.

I got home and found Cassie sitting on the couch with a flat rectangular shaped box on her lap. She was obviously waiting for me to come home.

“Hey, Cassie. Nice of you to finally come back home,” I teased her. She laughed.

“Your boyfriend sent this,” she chuckled.

I instinctively wanted to protest that he wasn't my boyfriend, but I kept quiet.

“What is it?” I asked.

“I have no idea, but it had the Jules label on it,” she said as she fixed her gaze on the box like she was trying to pry it open with her eyes.

I was extremely tired, but I was just as curious to see what it was. We opened the box and I took out the contents.

“It's so beautiful,” she said as I brushed the dress down.

It was a crimson dress adorned with tiny stones that made it glimmer under the light. It had a high slit on the side and I hoped it wasn’t too high for me. But it looked like it would be my perfect size.

“Where are you going to wear this?”

“He invited me to a family dinner.”

“Wait, what? Already?”

“Yeah, is it too soon?” I bit my lower lip anxiously as I looked from the dress to Cassie.

“No, it's perfect. I’m sure he wouldn't introduce you to his family if he didn’t feel comfortable about it,” she said.

“Well, I haven’t had time to process things properly, but technically, this would be our first date,” I said.

“It’s more of an introduction, if you ask me,” she teased again. “Will you introduce him toyourfamily?”

The smile on my face froze. Did she always have to bring them up? I never really thought about it until then, but Daniel taking me to see his family meant that he was either serious or he didn’t see it as a big deal. Knowing him, he probably just wanted me to grace them with my presence. Either way, things were moving fast and, I had to admit, I loved it. Eventually I would probably have to introduce him to Susan and James, but that thought only got me more worried.

“You don’t have to do it,” Cassie said, freeing me from the chokehold my thoughts had placed me in.

“Nah, it’s fine,” I sighed. It was inevitable that he’d eventually have to meet them. There was no need getting so worked up about it now, and besides, everything was going well so I shouldn't worry about things that haven't happened. I was sure it would be totally, completely fine.

I went to my room and crashed on my bed, all my energy completely drained. The only thing that fueled me was my excitement. I was already so close to getting a cure for Jordan and now things with Daniel were going great. I didn’t see him as a romantic guy, but he had definitely started to prove me wrong.
