“Plug it in and find out.”

I hesitated at first, but when I saw how serious her face was, I inserted it into my computer. She guided me through a number of files until I saw one named, "Reed Biotech". Naturally, I opened it immediately.

“What the…?”

“You're looking at company secrets, I presume.”

“Don't tell me,” I murmured as I scrolled through the seemingly endless data.

“Yep. The client I told you about. The dead one.” Her tone was grim.

It hit me that I was stepping into a world that I wanted no part of. This was too dangerous. She could make a lot of enemies with this information and she could also be a target if anyone found out what she had. Or if anyone wanted to use this information against the companies listed on the drive. I scrolled through the other organizations and my guess was correct. All of the companies were based in San Francisco.

“What do they want with this?”

“I have no idea. I was hoping you could answer that. From the looks of it, they are an organization that collects dirt on the major companies here in San Francisco.”

She reached over me, took control of my keyboard, and opened a file that had the picture of a man I knew too well.

“This is the reason why,” she said.

“Aaron Cooper? What does he have to do with this?” I asked.

“No idea. Maybe he's a target? But I looked him up and he owns no company in the Bay Area. Why is he the only exception?”

"I see what you are driving at. You really think he had something to do with the rumors that plummeted the stocks of this company. What would he gain?” I asked, confused. “There's no way he's involved. He's our biggest investor and if we tank, he stands to lose a lot.”

“As you know, Daniel. Everyone is a suspect until proven otherwise.” She was a lot harder than I remembered.

“If San Francisco companies are their targets, then they must be located here,” I pointed out, squinting my eyes over the screen in front of me.

“Exactly,” she responded, snapping her fingers.

“What exactly is your plan? Don't you think we should give this to the police?”

“Well, Iama police officer of sorts, Daniel,” she laughed. “Besides, some of them may be in on this, too.”

“It’s dangerous, Jolene. I don’t think you should get involved,” I calmly said.

“Bah, this is child's play. I’ll be fine,” she chuckled. “It’s nice to see that you still care about me, though.”

“You know they're going to come after you if they know you have this, right?”

“I’m hoping they do just that,” she smiled.

“You don't seem to under…”

“Daniel, I do understand. But I have a dead client to avenge. I'm not going to do much. I just need to get enough information about them.”

“I can never win against you, can I?”

“Nope, keep trying though,” she chuckled.
