“Flore…”

“Has he been good to you?” she interrupted him. “I do not trust any man in this family. I would have suggested you do the same. But Daniel is different.”

“Yes, he has been good to me,” I laughed as I turned to Daniel, who buried his face in his palm. For some reason, I was curious to know what Daniel said about me.

“Good. You look gorgeous, Amy,” she complimented. I used that opportunity to do the same.

“Can you guys please stop fawning over each other?”

“Don’t worry, I am not going to steal her from you,” she teased. “Even though sheismy type,” she continued as she winked at me. Daniel shot her a disgruntled look as we both laughed.

“So, I hear you're a big shot in the science field.” I wasn't sure if she was genuinely interested or just making polite conversation about my work.

“Oh, I’m just trying to pull my weight,” I replied.

“Don’t be so modest, Amy,” Daniel butted in. “She's a brilliant scientist. We've put her in charge of the medical research in the company.”

“Wow, that's really impressive,” Florence said, as she gulped down a glass of champagne.

The entire room suddenly fell silent as Davis Reed entered. Maids and butlers stopped their incessant scurrying, and every conversation stopped. Florence kept on clinking her glass which was probably totally intentional.

I had never seen him in person, even though I worked at his company and I had only seen him a few times on the news. He had a bulky build, and anyone would say that he was handsome, actually way too handsome for his age. He walked into the room and moved toward the chair at the head of the table followed by Damien and his mother. They sat down and the maids and butlers resumed their never-ending movements. Damien shot me a puzzled look. He clearly didn’t know that I was attending the dinner. I smiled at him, but he just turned away.

The maids ushered in trays of exotic foods that suited everyone’s preference. There were plates of seafood, turkey, and vegetables. It was more of a feast than a family dinner.

“We shall give a blessing this time,” Anastasia noted as she stared at Florence, who had already begun nibbling on a piece of salmon. Florence let out a quiet hiss.

Damien shared the blessing, and everyone started in on the food. Jamie and Xander filled their plates with roasted turkey, while Damien took a small portion of salad. Anastasia was still sipping on her glass of champagne, and Daniel and Florence dished out salmon.

“Who's your guest?” Mr. Reed inquired as he cut through the huge piece of turkey on his plate.

“This is Dr. Amelia Palmer. She is the lead scientist on the ongoing research at the company.”

“I see,” he said as he forked a piece of turkey into his mouth.

“Why does she have your mother’s necklace?” he asked. The whole room fell silent except for Jamie and Xander who looked like they were having the time of their lives.

“Because I gave it to her,” Damien snapped.

“May I ask why?”

“It is unlike you to take interest in whatever I do that is not related to the company.”

“She’s rather talented,” Damien contributed.

“And it seems Daniel has taken a liking to her,” Anastasia chuckled. “Let the children be, Davis.”

“Very well,” he sneered. “How far have you gone with your research, Dr. Palmer?”

“We are very close, Mr. Reed. A few more weeks and we will be ready to start the process of submitting it for approval.”

“That’s good. He has a few weeks to spare,” he said as he fixed his gaze on Daniel.

“So do you, I hope,” Daniel said. I heard a slight cough from Florence.

“Excuse me,” Mr. Reed said, his eyebrows raised to their limits.

“You never intended to tell us, did you?”
