Auburn arrived first and the rest of the researchers trooped in within an hour after her arrival. We started working, and Damien sat down, waiting for when his team was ready to start the analysis. I had grown fond of him. He was always in the lab, helping oversee his team. A great motivator and a keen mind, he always gave us whatever assistance he could.

“Okay Damien, you’re up,” I said, as he jumped up.

The lab was drowned in noises anytime Damien and his team worked due to their computers and other strange devices.

“Eighty-five percent!” he said with a smile that caught his whole face.

“Oh, my God!” I exclaimed. The whole lab erupted in cheers. After weeks of toiling, we finally had a major breakthrough.

“We still have fifteen percent to make up for, but we are officially done for the day,” I said, as more cheers echoed throughout the lab.

“You’re something else, do you know that?” Damien had a sweet smile on his face.

“I do now,” I laughed. "Thanks."

“We should celebrate,” Damien suggested. “We should celebrate,” he repeated, this time a little louder for the entire lab to hear. They all murmured in agreement.

“What do you have in mind?” I asked. He grinned.

“Well, whatever you decide, just text me. There's something I need to do first.”

Saint Andrews Memorial Hospital had always been filled with people, but today was different. I walked through the halls and barely found a single soul, but I was glad for that. I walked into Jordan’s room and saw Jennifer sleeping on a chair. She probably had an incredibly hectic day at work. I looked at Jordan who was still wide awake.

“Hey, Jordan,” I said as I sat beside her bed.

“Amy,” she said excitedly but not too loud as to wake Jennifer.

“How have you been?” I asked. “Hope the hospital has been treating you well.”

“Yes, I even got a new nurse assigned to me. She’s pretty, chatty, and really nice.”

“Oh, Jordan,” I laughed. “I’m sorry I haven’t been able to come see you as much as I want to. You know I've been so busy at work.”

“It’s okay. Because of you, I’ll finally be able to go back home.” She smiled. It took no effort at all for her to make me emotional. She had always done that without knowing, and I knew I couldn’t show her any shred of pity. She hated it.

“So, about that. We arereallyclose.”

“Really?” she asked as her eyes widened.

“Yes. I’ve already talked to your mom about you joining the trial group. There’s loads of red tape we’ll have to get through before it’s officially approved. But if you’re in the trial, you’ll get it immediately. Of course, if you feel uncomfortable, you can definitely decline participation. You’re a big reason I went down this path, but it doesn’t all rest on you, okay? Even if you don’t want to be a part of the trial group, I’m still happy about all the work I’ve done.”

Her eyes became clouded with tears, and I carefully embraced her. She had been stuck in this hospital for as long as I could remember. It was hard for a teenager to miss out on so much: school, friends, and just being crazy. My biggest wish would be for her to finally get her life back from this terrible disease. That drove all my work. If not her, people like her.

“What about your boyfriend?” she asked teasingly.

“For the thousandth time, he is not my boyfriend.” I laughed.

“Well, he should be. You two would look cute together,” she chuckled.

“I probably didn't teach you how to mind your business.” I laughed as I lovingly rubbed my forehead onto hers.

“Are you staying the night?”

“I won’t be able to. I still have to go to work tomorrow,” I answered. “I’m sorry.”

“I only asked because I want to sleep peacefully tonight and I can’t do that with you and Mom camping in my room.” I burst out in uncontrollable laughter.

“OK, OK, I’ll leave, already.”
