“Good. And please take her with you. Ever since I got off the ventilator, she's spent all her time off work here. I don’t think she has slept on a bed since then.”

I walked toward Jennifer, who was crumpled up on the armchair, still in her uniform.

“Hey, Jennifer, wake up,” I said as I gently shook her shoulders.

“Leave me alone, whoever you are. I want to sleep,” she said lazily as she yawned.

“You can sleep in your own bed tonight. How about that?”

“No. I need to stay here with Jordan. She needs me. I need her.”

“She’ll be fine. You need to get some rest.”

“I was resting before you woke me up.” She smiled.

“You need proper rest. Come on,” I ordered as I stretched out my hands. She grabbed them and reluctantly stood up. We scrubbed at her eyes, as if to get the sleepiness out of them and looked around the room, eventually focusing on Jordan.

“I’ll be back tomorrow, okay, baby?”

“Of course you will,” Jordan said lightly.

“Oh, don’t be like that, sunshine. The house gets lonely, you know,” she said as she rubbed her palm on her forehead. We said our goodbyes, and I promised to be back before the end of the week. Better not make any specific promises, as I had no idea when I’d actually be free.

We got to the house, and Jennifer immediately went to her room, crying. She tried so hard to do it silently, but she had the habit of hiding emotions and when she finally let them out, they overwhelmed her. I knelt down beside her and held her hands.

“She just wanted you to get some rest,” I said, trying to comfort her by patting her on the back.

“I know, but I want my baby. I want her here, Amy,” she said.

I got a tissue from her bag and wiped the streams of tears that made their way down her cheeks.

“She’ll be here soon,” I assured her.

She didn't stop crying until she fell asleep and for the first time in a long time, I prayed that I'd have the cure on time. Then Jordan would finally be able to come home.

Chapter 38

Daniel

Ihadbeenexpectingher all day and it was obvious that I was alone in the office, but Phil still had to alert me. Company procedures and all that. It was an odd practice, but it had saved me from many unpleasant conversations with my brothers in the past.

I was on a phone call, but that didn’t stop her from making herself comfortable on the couch.

“Jolene, what do you have for me today?” I asked, looking at my computer screen.

“Good morning to you too, Daniel,” she said wryly.

“Still as coy as ever I see,” I laughed. “I've been so busy. There's a press conference to organize and I have to make sure that it goes according to plan.”

“It's alright,” she casually said with a shrug.

“So, have you found a connection?”

“Not yet, but there's something you should know.”

“Go on, I’m listening,” I replied as I waved my hand, urging her to keep talking.

“I think they're onto you. Whoever they are.”
