“Why do you think that?” I asked with a serious look, giving her my full attention now.

“I looked into the information they had on each company and found out that Reed had a lot more information than the others.”

“So, we’re a target?”

“I believe so.”

A knock interrupted our conversation. It was Phil, with an espresso for Jolene. She thanked him and he walked out of the office.

“Some things never change,” I said.

She laughed. “That guy takes his job too seriously,” she noted, as she took a sip from the cup.

“You should have met Madeline,” I replied. “But, back to the business at hand. Is there anything you need?”

“Yeah, a lot of luck,” she replied. “It's possible that they have found me.”

My eyes widened as I nervously adjusted myself on the chair.

“What do you mean, 'they’ve found you'?”

“It’s just a possibility, Daniel. I have to assume these things, you know. It comes with the job.”

“I never got the chance to ask you why you became Nancy Drew all of a sudden. I thought you planned to go to Princeton.”

“Oh, I did, and, if you must know, I have a degree in econometrics and qualitative economics,” she proudly pointed out.

“Then why did you choose this career path?” I asked, hoping she couldn't hear the disapproval in my voice.

“It’s what I love, Daniel.” I sighed as I heard a knock on the door.

“Come in,” I answered the knock on the door.

“It’s Dr. Palmer. She’s here to see you.”

“Let her in,” I said as I brushed down on my shirt to straighten it.

“Oh, I see you're busy,” she said, as she walked halfway through the door. She was beautiful, even though she was in an oversized lab coat and her hair had a rigid resemblance to a nest. She had an alluring look on her face which complemented the huge smile on her lips.

“No, not at all,” I said as I waved her in. “Amy, this is Jolene. Jolene, Amy.” Amy walked in slowly, and sat on the chair opposite mine. “You probably know each other since we all attended the same high school.”

“I knew your face looked familiar,” Amy said, as she extended her hand toward Jolene.

“I'm sorry, I don’t think I've seen yours before,” Jolene replied, as she shook Amy's hand.

“That’s okay, there were quite a lot of students,” Amy responded.

“True,” Jolene replied dryly.

Jolene grabbed her bag and got up.

“My business is done, so I'll excuse myself. Daniel.” She nodded toward me in a weirdly uncomfortable way and moved in the direction of my office door.

“I’ll talk to you later, Jolene.”
