“Amy! Our research is on the news,” Janice said as she walked into the lab. She had gone out to get coffee for anyone who needed it.

“What do you mean, our research is on the news?”

“Here,” she said as she handed her phone over to me. I watched as Harvey answered multiple questions from reporters. He was the lead researcher of the company, but it should have been me up there. At least he gave me credit for leading the project and that it was my idea, evolved from my past research. I gave the phone back to Janice as the entire lab gathered around it and I retreated to my office. They seemed happy about it, I thought, as I watched them giggle. I had to get out of here. Daniel had not only betrayed my trust, he had managed to use me for his selfish means. I had been so careful, but I guess it taught me that following one's heart is stupid. Science and logic is what we need to rely on. That's always consistent. I wasn’t even his girlfriend, but he had already managed to break me. I wanted to scream, but I just needed to get out of there.

I picked up my laptop bag and walked out to the lab’s exit.

“Amy, what’s up? Are you okay?” Damien asked, noticing my obvious anger.

“I’m just a little lightheaded,” I said. “I need to go home.”

“Can I drive you home?” he asked.

“I’ll be fine,” I snapped.

“I insist, Amy,” he said. “If you’re feeling lightheaded, you shouldn’t go home alone.”

I had planned to keep quiet throughout the ride, but Damien asked a lot of pertinent questions concerning my mood. I gave in and told him everything that had happened, the contract I had with the company and Daniel’s promise that he failed to keep. I also told him about our relationship and how I felt used and betrayed, but it was no new feeling to me. I expected him to give me some lame advice, but he stayed quiet. It was better that way. My feelings raged, and I felt like I was going to explode at any moment.

“This is the street,” I said, pointing in the direction of Jennifer’s house.

“This is not where you live. I can remember that much,” he replied. I had forgotten that he had picked me up before.

“Yeah, I stay here sometimes,” I replied. “Thank you.” I said as I stepped out of his car.

"Take it easy, Amy, and take care of yourself. I’ll check up on you later."

I didn’t expect Jennifer to be at home, so I checked where she normally kept the spare key. It was there. I walked to her room and crashed on the bed.

Why did Daniel do this? We were so close to really having something. Something I thought was real.

At least he was happy now, and richer than ever.

I couldn’t allow this to affect Jordan's treatments. I tried to focus on her, but it was impossible at that point. I rolled on the bed, trying to get Daniel off my mind, repeating the same question over and over again, but having my feelings oscillate between heartbreak and betrayal.

Why did he do this to me?

I rolled and stretched on the bed, trying to get some sleep, but I couldn’t. My mind was too murky so I took my phone and scrolled through my contacts. I wanted to call Jennifer. She knew how to comfort me during times like this.

Chapter 42

Daniel

Ireallywasn’tinthe mood to talk to anyone right now, but here was Jolene at my door. I had been drinking. The pain of what this might look like to Amy was too much.

How did everything go so fucking sideways?

And now Jolene was here, looking like the angel of death. She definitely had bad news. And as much as I didn’t want to hear it, I needed to hear it.

“Is everything okay?” she asked.

“Sure, everything is fine,” I said nonchalantly. “What’s up?”

“I like what you’ve done with the place,” she said disapprovingly as she scanned the empty bottles littering the kitchen counter. “Is this about Amy?”

“I've lost everything. The girl, the company, everything. It’s all gone, Jolene.”

“It’s gonna be okay, Daniel,” she said, but I wasn’t reassured. “But hey, I’ve gotta talk to you about the hard drive. I’ve made some progress.”
