Mom had been wheeled into the emergency room almost forty-five minutes ago and every minute of not knowing was making it increasingly difficult to bear and ward off the worst thoughts. I forced myself to not let those thoughts paralyze me as I spotted the doctor approaching. I got up, my sister was right next to me, still grasping my hand.

“Doctor. Please tell me she’s okay,” I said.

“She’s stable. We've slowed the bleeding and we’ve given her something for the pain.”

“Can we see her?” Sarah asked, already moving toward the door.

“Yes, but she’s resting right now.”

The three of us walked to the bay where Sarah and I saw our bright, beautiful mother, sleep with an IV drip plugged into her arm. Sarah swiped at the tears spilling underneath her eyes. Our hands were still tightly clasped, and our shoulders sagged together in relief. I unclasped my hand from Sarah’s and put my arm around her shoulders.

Sarah placed her other hand on our mom’s and I brushed a stray hair from her face. She looked pale. After a moment, we turned back to the doctor.

“What happened to her, doctor?”

“Has this ever happened before? Has your mom ever showed any of these symptoms before? Bleeding, lower abdominal pain?”

We both shook our heads.

“No–no,” I answered. “She’s been complaining about feeling like she had indigestion lately, but she said it had been getting better.”

The doctor nodded.

“I see. Well, Ms. Moore,” he looked between me and Sarah. “The symptoms your mother presented with gave us an idea about what is going on, but we also had a scan to confirm our theory. We believe your mother has severe endometriosis.”
