He let out a low whistle.

Faye nudged him in the ribs with her elbow. “See? I told you this was great.”

“Yeah, but you have yet to tell me why we came up this way. This is cool and everything, but—”

“It’s the perfect place for a date, don’t you think?”

His words caught in his throat. Was she suggesting they were on a date right now? That was the only explanation that made sense in his head. She’d insisted on taking a ride when a visit to the corral would have sufficed. Now they stood at the top of the world alone, and she wanted to show him something that was important to her.

Adam glanced at her. Surprisingly, he didn’t see anything wrong with that idea. Perhaps he’d been too focused on Dahlia when Faye standing right there in front of him.

She turned her beautiful smile to him and gestured around them. “Don’t you think this place is romantic? You could put a picnic blanket there with candles and a bottle of champagne. You could ride up here for a night of star gazing. Dahlia would be super impressed if you brought her up here.”

That’s when his stomach bottomed out.

He’d misunderstood, and the disappointment that started in his gut had made its way into his throat. The sour taste was a reminder that he needed to keep his eye on the prize.

Unfortunately, Faye didn’t fit into that plan.

“Iknow you’re probably not even thinking that far ahead, but seriously, this is the most romantic place I’ve ever been.” She wrapped her arms around herself. If she wasn’t careful, Adam would pity her for these silly daydreams. Faye glanced at him, finding him studying her, and her cheeks immediately flushed. “What?”

“Let me guess, your boyfriend brought you here or vice versa.”

She looked away. “Nope.”

“Which one?”

“Both.”

He was silent, and she could just imagine what he was thinking. Poor Faye Callahan, who had never dated. It could be worse. He might even think he shouldn’t be listening to her advice because she had no experience.

Well, if that was what he thought, he was wrong. What she had to say held value because she was a girl and she knew what a girl would like. She gestured around them. “I wanted to show you this place, and I thought we could make a few trips out here so you don’t get lost when you eventually bring Dahlia here.”

“Who says I’m going to bring Dahlia out here?” His wry smile said it all. He didn’t trust her advice.

“Because if you’re serious about this girl, you’ll do something to show her you like her. Could you take her to dinner and a movie, and then maybe a stroll down Main Street? Of course you could. But how many other guys do you think have done exactly that?”

His smug look faded. There. He was catching on.

“Do you know how often a girl fantasizes about coming to a place like this just to talk or share a picnic? Girls like romance. They like to be swept off their feet. You have to figure out what she likes and do it. Based on what you’ve told me, I just figured she’d like this place because she likes to go riding. But you could come up with something else if you want.” She was rambling and she knew it. Why couldn’t she just say her piece and be done with it?

In an attempt to stop sounding so pathetic, she surveyed the area she’d picked out. This place was like heaven. As embarrassing as it was to admit, she’d fantasized about coming here just like she’d told him. Eventually, she realized that there wasn’t a guy in Copper Creek who would ever bring her here, and it wasn’t just because none of them knew about it. No one seemed to have an interest in her, whether because of her father or her own personality. It didn’treallybother her. Faye had always managed to find happiness despite her disappointments.

She snuck a glance in his direction, finding Adam scanning the area again. His expression softened and he nodded. “Okay. I can see it. Are you sure your dad would be okay with me bringing someone here?”

“Sure. Why not?”

He gave her a pointed look, and she laughed.

“Okay, so I’ll have to tell him that I gave you permission to borrow our horses and that you’d be wandering the property.” She grimaced. “Actually, he probably wouldn’t want you to come out here on your own unless you’ve taken a few trips. So maybe we can come up with a way for you to be guided here.”

He made a face. “If I’m supposed to have a romantic picnic or outing or whatever, I’m not going to want to have a chaperone. That sort of defeats the purpose, doesn’t it?”

“Then I guess we’ll have to take more rides out this way. Maybe after a few, you can be the one to guide the way.”
