She couldn’t be tamed.

And yet she chose to stay.

One day she might realize that she could go somewhere else—be something else. Maybe she’d already figured that part out. And yet, she’d stayed. She was like a wild stallion who knew exactly how to escape and yet made a conscious decision to remain here. It was admirable and something he’d never done himself.

Adam looked at her out of the corner of his eye. Much like the mechanics of cars, the world would continue to make sense in certain ways. His infatuation with Faye fell into that realm of understanding. Adam found there was always a reason when something caught his attention. Sometimes it was because a part didn’t fit right.

But other times it was like tonight when the universe told him to be patient. The reveal would come, and it was going to be amazing.

Faye

Faye’s chin rested in her hand as she stared off at the landscape before her. She couldn’t seem to wrap her head around the way things had gone over the weekend. It felt like she had been on one of those carnival rides that left her dizzy and wondering if she’d left her stomach behind.

As if reacting to her thoughts, her gut clenched and turned over. On top of that, her face flushed even though there was no one around to be embarrassed for—only herself.

How had she gotten to this point? She’d allowed herself to develop feelings for a guy who was obviously not interested in her. He had a girl he was willing to go to great lengths in order to impress.

Then that stupid little argument they had about him not wanting to spend time with her. That couldn’t have been more mortifying than if she’d admitted to telling him she had a small crush on him.

She covered her face with her hands and let out a groan.

Friends.

He wanted to befriends.

Even though Faye hadn’t been in a traditional relationship before, she knew what it meant to be put in the friend zone. She’d never get him to see her as anything else. What was worse was the fact that after they had that conversation, he had changed the way he acted around her. He kept his distance from her, and it was almost like his body was stiffer.

Faye shouldn’t have said anything. She should have just let things be and seen how things played out. Adam would be crazy to want anything to do with her now, so she might as well force herself to move on.

“Everything okay? Are there problems with the truck?”

Faye’s head popped up to find Grace and Eloise coming up the porch steps. They were clad in boots and their riding gear, a blush of a brisk morning ride present on their faces.

Grace sat in the chair on the other side of the small table where Faye had placed her mug, and Eloise opted to lean against the railing of the porch.

Faye shook her head. “Nothing is wrong with the truck. Everything is going according to schedule,” she muttered bitterly.

Grace chuckled as she glanced in Eloise’s direction. “Sounds like it.” Sarcasm dripped from her voice. “I told you it wasn’t worth fixing the truck, but you just had to—”

“This isn’t about the truck.”

Grace snapped her mouth shut and lifted her brows. “Okay. Well, something is clearly bothering you.”

“Well, maybe it’s none of your business.”

Her younger sister lifted her hands, the look on her face saying it all as she got to her feet and went inside.

Eloise shook her head, laughing under her breath. “That wasn’t very nice, Faye.”

“I don’t care,” she muttered.

Her older sister moved across the porch and took the seat Grace had vacated. “I think you might want to reconsider how you’re treating Grace, considering how she was willing to give you mom’s truck in the first place. And isn’t Riley footing the bill for the parts?”

“Yeah,” Faye groaned. “You’re right. I blew it.”

She laughed again. “I’m sure she’ll be fine. You can apologize later. So what’s the matter if it’s not the truck?”
