“Why don’t you like Dahlia?”

A sigh was all she could manage.

“I’m genuinely curious. What’s so bad about her? Do you even know her?”

She placed a hand on her hip and faced him. “I don’t have to know her to know that she’s not good enough for you. Anyone that you have to change for isn’t good enough for you, don’t you know that?” She couldn’t help the irritation from seeping into her tone.

He moved closer and she sobered. “She never asked me to change.”

“But you did.”

“Not really. I learned a new skill. It’s like if I were to learn ballroom dancing to impress a ballerina.”

“Ballerinas don’t ballroom dance.”

“How do you know? They could if they wanted to.”

This conversation was getting ridiculous. They were already off-topic, and he had come so close to her that she had nowhere to go unless she pushed him out of the way to escape the stall. “That’s not the point. You thought she wouldn’t like you if you didn’t fit into the realm of what she might want. Did you even try to win her over without going through all of this trouble?”

He cocked his head to the side and his eyes flickered with something strange. His focus swept over her face from the top of her head to her mouth and then bounced back to her eyes. “But if I hadn’t decided to do that, then you wouldn’t have someone to work on your mother’s truck. In a way, you should be thanking her.”

“Okay, yeah. I’ll make sure to do that next time.” She snorted and moved to finish brushing Blaze down when Adam stopped her.

“You wanna know what I think?”

“What do you think?” Her voice hitched, giving herself away.

“I think you’re jealous.”

Her mouth dry, all she could do was stare at him. There they were, confined to a small stall in the barn. She was all but pinned between him and the horse behind her. Yes, if she wanted to, she could slip beneath Blaze’s belly and move to the other side.

Only she didn’t want to.

Not in the slightest.

Her head told her to make her escape. This wasn’t in the plan. He’d cornered her like the little mouse she was, and this wouldn’t bode well for either of them.

But her heart, the rebel that it was, refused.

“So what if I am?”

His brow lifted.

Time stopped. Everything slowed except for her heart and her racing pulse. Wrong. This was all wrong. She shook her head and held up her hands between them, though due to lack of space, they ended up resting on his chest. “You have a girlfriend.”

“I told you, she’s not my girlfriend.”

“You were on adatewith her.”

He tucked his finger under her chin and gently lifted her face, her gaze moving to his eyes before he spoke again. “No, we weren’t.”

She blinked. “You weren’t?” Her mouth had gone completely dry. She couldn’t swallow if she wanted to. Adam had managed to blindside her for a second time that day and she was struggling to keep up.

Adam’s gaze dipped to her mouth. “And Ireallywant to kiss you.”

That did it. All rationality and common sense fled from her body. With one whispered word, she doomed herself. “Okay.”
