She arched a brow. “Really.” Her voice was flat and assumed far too much. “You’ve clearly developed feelings for her. Otherwise, you wouldn’t be doing such a terrible job around here.”

His mouth dropped open, and he just about started a rant regarding how much he did around here, but she stopped him.

“You might not have those deep feelings yet. But you’re thinking about her constantly and youwantsomething to happen, right?”

“I suppose you’re right.”

“Well, that’s enough then. Ask her out on an official date and tell her that you want to see where things might go. If she says she wants the same thing, then you’re golden. If she says no, then at least you have your answer.”

As simple as that seemed, it terrified him.

“Only, I’d send her a quick message so you don’t just show up and find out she’s with another guy.”

His head whipped around and he stared at her.

She chuckled, turning her attention back to the truck. “Relax. It’s going to work out. These things usually do.”

“Shouldn’t I just wait until tomorrow to see her? That’s when we usually get together. I could message her and ask if she’s coming to work on the truck—”

Bridget laughed again. “What are you so afraid of? Seriously. This is a girl we’re talking about. It’s not like you have to talk to her father. Now, Zeke Callahan isn’t the kind of guy I’d want to have a meeting with.” She let out a low whistle. Her hand on her hip, she tilted her head once more. “Just bite the bullet and tell her you want to see her tonight. Then maybe you can actually get some quality work done around here.”

Faye

Faye’s stomach had been in a constant state of upheaval since the last time she saw Adam. Her sisters had all called her crazy at one point or another but meant it in different ways. Those who were married or involved with a guy told her to just rip off the Band-Aid and go see him. There wasn’t any reason for her to sit and stew about where their relationship was headed.

Basically, they told her to put herself out of her misery.

Then there was Brielle and Eloise. The only other sisters who couldn’t care less about dating anyone seriously. Brielle had even suggested that she go out tonight to the country club and find a random guy to pull in for a kiss.

That wasn’t a helpful suggestion. And she had a sinking suspicion that Brielle was only telling Faye to do so to get back at her for bringing Wade by the house. That was an issue all on its own.

If Brielle didn’t want the guy to inquire about her, she shouldn’t have flirted with him. It was her own fault.

So now Faye stewed on her front porch debating about whether she should get ready to go dancing with Eloise and Brielle, go for a ride to clear her head, or just call the guy and tell him he was a jerk for kissing her and then running away like a big coward.

Nope.

She wasn’t going to do that last one. Faye Callahan wasn’t the kind of girl to go chasing after a guy who didn’t want to be with her. Adam might have kissed her and said some really romantic things, but if he wasn’t going to stick around, then he clearly was doing and saying those things for show.

Faye jumped up from her chair then paused. She still hadn’t decided whether she was going for that ride or going out with her sisters. If she went to the club, she very well could run into Adam. Or worse, she could run into Dahlia.

A horse ride it was.

She’d just get her boots, hat, phone, and…

And there was a truck coming up the road to her house. Her heart flipped like a glorified acrobat performing a trick on the trapeze. She knew that truck. What was Adam doing here?

Faye glanced toward the house and then the barn. Yes, she was looking for an escape. Had he contacted her even once before today, she might have been able to handle it. The problem was, she’d built up the expectation for this conversation so high in her head that she didn’t think she could stomach it now.

As much as she wanted to dart inside and tell her sisters that she wasn’t home, she couldn’t. Her feet wouldn’t move.

Shoot!

There was a part of her that wanted to put him in his place, and that part of her was ready to see the fallout. Instead of moving toward the house, her feet took her to the edge of the porch. She crossed her arms and waited for him to get out of his truck.

Faye didn’t know what she was going to say to him. Her feet and her heart had a mind of their own, and they’d have to come up with something.
