“You can’t say anything.”

She whipped her head around and gave him a flat look. “I’m not going to rat out my sister. I just feel bad for her.”

He made a face. “Somehow I don’t think she’d like that either.”

“You’re probably right.” Eloise sighed. “Well, then I might actually be the last to get married out of all of us.”

They made it out to the veranda, and Shane grew still. She rested her forearms on the railing, glancing at him before giving him a nervous smile. “What? You can’t bethatworried I’ll spill the beans. I kept our relationship a secret—”

“Eloise, I have everything I could ever want in the world.”

She snickered. “You don’t have to rub it in.”

“No. What I’m trying to say is that I don’t want anything else. Well, except for one thing.”

Eloise sobered, facing him as she leaned her hip against the rail. “Yeah?”

“Yeah,” he whispered, moving closer. He brushed the back of his knuckles against her cheek. “I never realized just how empty my life was without someone to share it with. And I’ve finally found her. You can say you’re already mine until you’re blue in the face, but the truth is, you’ll never be truly mine until you…” He stepped back, dug the ring out of his pocket and sank to one knee. “…until you say yes.”

She stared at the ring, her expression not changing. “Are you sure?”

His insides churned. That wasn’t the reaction he’d been expecting. “I wouldn’t be on my knee if I wasn’t.”

“It’s just that you were so worried about making our relationship public and—”

“Eloise,” he said, his heart practically splitting. “It’s an easy yes or no answer.”

Her eyes flew to meet his as she cut herself off. They stared at each other for what felt like an eternity. Time slowed, noises from the club faded. A breeze tugged at her dress. And then she said the one word that gave him more joy than he would ever deserve.

“Yes,” she whispered.
