Chapter One

SEBASTIAN

Guyslike me didn’t get paid to fight.

Guys like Joe and guys like Atlas made a career of being big and fighting.

My career had been built off scoring goals.

Impossible goals.

Game-winning goals.

Goals that changed the course of a game - or even a season.

With all that out in the open - in my heart, as a hockey player, when it came time to fight…you fought.

Normally if something happened, Joe or Atlas would cover my back for me.

If someone hit me the wrong way or tried to take me out or just decided to act like a prick, Joe and Atlas were there in a second to drop the gloves and throw some punches.

Every now and again though, I needed to do the same.

It was no big surprise that theSOLA Empirewas still the worst team in the league. That sort of came with the territory, but that didn’t mean we were a bunch of hockey players who didn’t believe in ourselves and love the game.

If I were to get hooked up to a lie detector test, I’d fail in a second if I said Andy started the fight.

I bumped into him first.

He threw an elbow to defend himself.

I crosschecked him for the hell of it. And I got away with it.

He turned and swatted his stick against mine.

“Fuck off,” he called to me and skated for a pass.

I went after him, wanting to get in the way, but I held back.

Henry made a move and poked the puck out of Andy’s reach.

I made my move for the puck.

“Nice job,” I called out to Andy.

“You really want to do this, Sebastian?” Andy called out.

“I’ve got nothing but time. How about you?”

“Fuck,” he called out. “Fine. Let’s do it.”

I should have gotten the puck, went down the ice and tried to score.

Instead, I dropped my stick and my gloves.

Again, a guy like me going in for a fight?

It was kind of rare to witness.
