She mouthed back,I know!

I pointed to the door and April walked away.

“Andy, I’m not messing with April in that way,” I said. “Why would you even say that?”

“Oh, calm down,” Andy said. “I’m joking. Relax, Seb. Man, you do need to get laid. So here’s the deal. My place is finally done.”

“It’s all done?” I asked.

“It’s totally livable now,” Andy said.

I felt someone looking at me and turned.

April hadn’t gone inside.

Meaning she could hear her brother talk to me.

“There’s some little things here and there that need to get worked on,” Andy said.

“So just get it all the way done then,” I said.

“Nah. It’s fine. It’ll give you a break from my sister. And it’ll give April a chance to be on her own. How is she doing? This job of hers… I don’t know about it…”

“She seems to be kicking ass,” I said. “You know April. She’s a pain in the ass and stubborn, but it always makes her good at what she does.”

“I hear that,” Andy said. “You keeping her safe?”

“Of course,” I said. “I can’t do that though if she leaves.”

“Well, maybe it’s time she does it all on her own. Alone. You know? I didn’t mean for her to crash and get stuck there. But you can tell her to leave.”

“I get to tell her to leave?” I asked.

I stared right at April.

She swallowed hard.

“I’m not telling her,” Andy laughed. “Man, I’m drunk. Just tell her my place is done. You can drive her over there and check it out. Hell, you might want to even stay there. Let her have your apartment.”

“You really love cutting me down, don’t you?” I asked.

“You can’t be cut down, Seb. Nothing gets to you. That’s why we’re best friends. I love you, man. You’re family to me. And to my sister. You’re like a second brother to her.”

I felt myself wanting to cringe.

April swallowed hard again.

“You have hockey games to play,” I said. “You need to go get some sleep, sober up and win some playoff games. I saw your last few games. You looked slow. Sluggish.”

“Oh, fuck off,” Andy said. “At least I’m still playing.”

“Must be nice to buy your team, huh? Overpay all the players and try to win. That’s lame.”

“You think I’m overpaid?” Andy asked.

“Way overpaid. You bum.”

“Oh, we’re fighting next time we see each other.”
