“I’ve got a memory for you,” I said. “Come with me. We’re going for a little walk.”

“Please don’t try taking me to some rocks or something dumb,” she said. “I was a kid then, Seb. I was a teenager. You were practically an adult. You already had your life planned out. The vision coming true. You don’t need to worry about me. At least back then you didn’t.”

“April,” I said. “Stop talking for a second and just come with me.”

She thinks she’s the only one with memories?

Did I have a crush on April when I was younger?

Hell no.

Of course I didn’t have a crush on her.

Did I care about her? Yes.

Did I want to protect her? Yes.

Did I think she’d grow up into this stunning woman who would give me the time of day right now? Possibly.

As soon as the carnival rides grew from the horizon, April pulled at my hand.

“Seb?”

“What?”

“I’m not getting on any scary rides.”

I looked at her and grinned.

She pulled at my hand even harder.

“Seb!”

“If you try stopping again, I’m going to toss you over my shoulder.”

She smiled.

She loved this.

All of it.

She was focused on a roller coaster and I was focused elsewhere.

I took her to a game.

One of those stupid games where you throw darts at balloons and try to win a giant teddy bear.

“Do you remember this?” I asked her.

Her cheeks turned bright red.

“Yeah. That’s right. I remember it. The night you got dumped by your first boyfriend and I thought I could win you a teddy bear at the carnival. And I blew through thirty bucks, ended up getting pissed and stealing a teddy bear for you.”

“Yeah. I remember.Bear.”

“You named the teddy bear I stole youBear?”

“Yes,” she confessed.
