“No. Not at all. You think this is going to win me over? Being all cute and romantic?”

“You just called me cute and romantic, didn’t you?”

“No. I didn’t say you. I meant… the gesture…”

“You’re blushing under that face crap, huh?”

“You’re relentless tonight,” April said.

“I kind of am, babe. It’s your fault.”

“My fault? How is this my fault?”

“It’s you. It’s everything about you, April. Top to bottom. Inside and out. Just everything. I see you and I see that dorky girl who was such a pain in the ass. Yet I knew something was there. And then you show up now, all grown up, looking like this?”

“Oh, yeah, go ahead, Seb. Flatter me now. I look so beautiful, huh?”

She started to turn and I grabbed her.

I pulled her against me.

She looked up at me and gently gasped.

“Fucking beautiful, April,” I whispered. “So fucking beautiful I have things in the air. All I want to do is be right here. My best friend… I don’t know what’s going to happen there. But whatever happens? It’s worth it. To kiss you. To taste you. To wear this weird face cream stuff. Worth it.”

“So let me get this straight. You see me with this goop on my face and your first thought is to tease me? Not anything casual and sympathetic?”

“Of course I have to tease you, babe. Plus, whatever made-up reason in your head you tell yourself to wear this stuff, it’s wrong. You don’t need it.”

“Spare me theyou’re beautiful the way you arestuff, Seb. I like wearing this stuff. I like pampering myself. Do I do it to impress you? No. You’re not that good looking.”

I laughed. “Oh, but I think I am. To you. For sure.”

“It makes me irate that I can’t just punch you in the face and walk away. It’s like I love you or something, you know?”

That last part was definitely not meant to come out.

April gasped and stepped away from me.

“I didn’t mean… like… I meant that… if I was able to hit you… your nose…”

“So how long do we keep this stuff on?” I asked, saving April from herself.

“Um, just a little while,” she said.

“It feels weird on my face,” I said.

“Well, you do have facial hair, Seb. I’m not sure it is really meant for a guy like you. You have a rough face.”

“A rough face?” I asked. “Did you just call me ugly?”

“No. I didn’t say that. You have a manly face. Rugged. Rough. Sexy.”

“Oh, right. There was a warning on the container.Do not use if you have a sexy face. I should have known.”

“You’re such an idiot,” she said, shaking her head. “I can’t believe this. I want to be so mad at you, yet I can’t. Because of this.”

“Because I have the balls to put this stuff on my face and look like an idiot in the hopes of making you smile. Because making you smile even for one second is worth any embarrassment on my end.” I stepped closer to April. “And you and I both know that not a single man in the world has done that for you. Which is a damn shame. Because a woman like you, April? You deserve it. You deserve it every day. All the time.”
