“What’s that now,Auggie?” I asked.

She covered her mouth. “Oh, shoot. That came out really wrong. No. No, Sebby. No. That was…”

“Did you think you were going to sleep in my bed with me?” I asked.

“Well, no. I thought I’d sleep in your bed. You could sleep somewhere else.”

“You expect to walk into my apartment and tell me where to sleep?”

April took a deep breath.

She let out a nervous laugh.

“Look who’s flustered now,Auggie,” I said.

“Oh, I hate that name.”

“I know you do.”

When I first met April, I always called her August. Just to pick on her. She hated being called August. I tried other months of the year but none fit as nicely as August.

Then one night she made me promise to never call her that ever again.

I did.

That’s when I started calling herAuggie.

And she hated that even more.

“You’re a guest here,” I said. “You can crash in my bed. I’ll sleep on the couch.”

“No, thanks,” April said. She batted her eyes. “I don’t need to sleep in crusty sheets from other women’s mistakes. Unless it storms.”

“Oh, come on,” I said with a laugh. “How old are you now? You’re still afraid of thunder?”

“Shut up,” she said. “That was a joke.”

“You’re really still afraid of thunder,” I said. “That’s so pathetic.”

“Oh, fuck off, Sebby,” she snapped.

I laughed.

She went from the balcony into my apartment.

I looked over my shoulder, watching her walk.

Those new curves that graced her hips swung like the pendulum of a clock.

I touched my chin.

I tried to think.

I honestly caught myself hoping for a fucking tornado or two to come through.

Anything that would get April into my bed with me…
