Rome turned his head and stared down the beach. “You think they’re alone yet? You think everything matches? I mean, her hair was really blonde, you know? Everything else blonde?”

“Ask Joe,” I said.

“Fuck,” Henry said. “Sebastian. Really?”

“Sorry,” I said. “That was a cheap shot. Rome. Look at me right now.”

He looked at me.

“What are you worried about?” I asked. “Huh? She wasn’t even going to give you the time of day. Look around. Plenty of women around here to get into trouble with. Are you going to get let one woman do this to you?”

“My favorite color is orange,” Rome said. “My favorite piece of clothing on a woman is a thong.”

“I tried,” I said to Jago.

“I’ll handle it,” Jago said. “I’ll clean up the mess you made. You’re getting really good at that, huh? Making a mess of everything, Sebastian. Your best friend asks you to help out his sister and you sleep with her? What a mess.”

“You asshole,” I growled.

Jago cackled and grabbed two beers and gave one to Rome.

The two walked away, pointing at women.

I stood alone with Henry and Atlas.

“I’m going to take off,” Atlas said. “Going to check on Hazel and Juniper Evelyn. Find something to do as a family.”

“All grown up, Atlas,” Henry said.

“Fuck you,” Atlas said.

He walked away.

I looked at Henry.

“I know,” he said. “You’re leaving too. This was good. Off-season bonding time. Surfing. Beer. Women. Good talks. I like it. Keep our minds off the game but on the team. You’re smart, Sebastian. Maybe smarter than you give yourself credit for.”

“And this somehow ties into things with April?” I asked.

“You know the answer to that. There’s excuses and there’s reasons. A big difference between the two.”

“Well, I just might reason myself into sitting here and getting drunk. Someone could drive me back home later.”

“Or that’s just an excuse to hide from the fact of how real you feel about April,” Henry said.

I curled my lip and kicked the cooler.

I walked away, no beer in hand.

No buzz in my head.

No drunk eyes.

No paddling out in the water, feeling like the world didn’t matter.

So it all came to something simple.

April.
