“How was the sex?”

I didn’t answer.

“Okay,” Jago said. “You really love her, don’t you?”

“Just be quiet,” I said.

I started to drive.

I drove around the block and parked away from the apartment, but not too far.

The building still very much in sight.

“Having second thoughts?” Jago asked. “Why don’t we do this, Sebastian. I’ll drive your car back home. You stay here. When you’re ready to come home, I’ll come get you. Or something. I don’t know. It’s obvious you don’t want to leave.”

“Jago,” I said.

“What?”

“Shut up.”

Jago nodded.

He lasted all of three seconds before talking again.

“So, what’s the plan? Just sit here and watch the building? Talk to me, Sebastian. You can talk to me, you know? It’s not all about hockey all the time. You and I, we are the team. You run the team. I’m the goalie. We’re tighter than anyone else. You know?”

“Jago.”

“I can’t shut up,” he said. “Not like this. I feel like we’re on a stakeout. Like you want to catch her cheating on you or something.”

Jago suddenly whistled.

“Oh. Fuck. Sebastian…”

“No,” I said. “It’s not that. It’s… I don’t even know what we are. There’s no cheating. There’s… can you just give me a second here to think about things?”

“Just tell me what you’re thinking about. Maybe I can help.”

I looked at Jago. I curled my lip. “You really want to know what I’m thinking?”

“Yes,” Jago said.

“I think I’m going to kill someone today.”

Jago eased backagainst the passenger door.

He reached to open the door.

“Not you,” I said. “Maybe.”

“What are you talking about, Sebastian?”

“I said I would protect her.”

“Her?”

“April,” I said. “We go way back, Jago. I know you and the guys know some of the story. You guys are hung up on the fact that she’s my best friend’s sister. It’s more than that.”
