“Okay. So help me out here. What are we doing here? Sorry to ask again, but is she with someone else? Cheating? Or… something like that?”

I rubbed my jaw.

I had been thinking and chewing on some words for a little while now.

“There’s a situation with an ex.”

“Fuck,” Jago sighed. He shut his eyes. “Sebastian.”

“Stop. Don’t even say it.”

“I’m going to say it,” Jago said. “I have to say it.”

“You say one word and I’ll punch you.”

“Go ahead then. Punch me. Attack me. Do what you need to do. This is bullshit. An ex? You’re going to sit here and worry about an ex of hers? That’s who you are now? You’ve never been the guy to get involved with this nonsense.”

I grabbed Jago’s shirt and pulled him toward me. “He wants to hurt her. He keeps texting her. She doesn’t respond. She wants nothing to do with him. She didn’t even tell me about it. I saw by accident.”

“Yeah. Okay. And you’re going to get involved?”

“I swore to protect her. Always.”

“You know how stupid this is, right?”

“I have an idea,” I said.

I pushed Jago away and ran a hand through my hair.

I didn’t need anyone to add to what I felt at that moment.

I knew the wordsstupidandriskyandinsane.

There were other words that came to mind too.

None of it mattered.

I had to keep my thoughts in a single box in my mind.

The only thing that mattered was the safety of April.

Call it instinct or love or just me being a stubborn guy, but it all paid off when a blue car drove past mine.

The car came to a sudden stop and out stepped a man.

He looked at the apartment building in a way that made me feel uneasy.

He made fists and walked toward the main door.

I opened my door and Jago grabbed me. “Sebastian.”

“I know what you’re trying to do,” I said. “I appreciate it. Now take your hand off me and just wait here.”

“Fuck,” Jago growled.

I slammed my door shut and jogged toward the apartment building.

I was only seconds behind the guy.
