I appreciated the beer.

Anything else I didn’t need.

It was exhausting.

Sitting around, thinking about April.

I checked in with her every single day.

A quick text to know she was okay.

Which she was.

I dealt with my agent and my lawyer, just to make sure things stayed under wraps and didn’t become some social media off-season story.

It also meant dealing with management and ownership too.

But that’s what my lawyer and agent got paid big bucks for.

All I had to do was read the prepared statements and sign off on them.

They were also keeping in touch with the detective too, just to make sure nothing crazy happened and things weren’t turned on me.

I wasn’t sure I even cared.

If going to jail meant keeping April from getting hurt, then it was worth it.

The knocking on my door continued.

Then my phone rang.

I saw Andy’s name on the screen.

“Shit,” I whispered.

I let it go to voicemail.

He called right back again.

On the fifth time he called, I answered.

“I’m not in the mood,” I said.

“Fuck off, you aren’t. I’m outside your door, knocking. I’ve got a plane to catch soon.”

“What the hell are you doing here?” I asked.

“Seb, we need to talk.”

I openedthe door and Andy rushed in.

He looked around. “This place looks like a crap. It’s been, what, a week? You let yourself and this place go that bad?”

He grabbed at my face, scratching at the new scruff I let grow in.

I backed away. “What do you want, man?”

“I’ve got a game tomorrow night.”
