“I’ll escort her out,” Seb said. “That a problem?”

Jeff didn’t answer.

He just slipped out of the office.

“Hey, Jeff, we quit too,” Steph called after him. “It’s me, April, Poppy, and Katie!”

“You better go tell them you just quit for them,” I said to Steph.

Then I looked at Seb. “Really? Are you stalking me or something?”

“Or something,” he said. He shut my office door. “We need to talk.”

“Do we?”

“You can’t be up here alone. Not anymore.”

“Good thing I just quit then.”

“April, listen. I came here to tell you to quit. To come be with me. To come live with me. To be right where you belong.”

“Seems like I’m one step ahead of you, Seb.”

He walked to the window and looked out. “Trees, huh?”

“What?”

“Your view. It’s all trees. It’s a terrible view. The beach is far better.”

“Well, my former boss thinks the beach distracts me.”

“That guy is a loser,” Seb said.

“You’re my distraction, Seb.”

“I know that, April. I’ve known everything all along. And now I’m telling you what’s next.”

“You’re just going to boss me around?”

“What else is there to do,Auggie?” he asked. He looked at me and his eyes were… beautiful. Raw and honest. “You going to hesitate to drive to your apartment? Going to sit outside the building? Stare at your home? Wait for me to call? So we could talk while you sneak into your apartment?”

My heart dropped. Then raced.

Seb stared at me.

“How many times?” I whispered.

“All the time, April.”

“All the time? Everyday?”

“Just about,” he said.

“And you…”

“There was no way you were going back in there alone,” he said. “Not afraid. Not thinking the thoughts I knew you were thinking.”

“You made sure I was home safely.”
