“Morning,Auggie,” I said.
“Sebby,” she said.
“Work late last night?”
“Eh, not really. I did do something though.”
I lifted an eyebrow.
My mind went to the most sexual things possible.
A vision of April sitting on my couch, feet pressing against the coffee table, her right hand down the front of her pajamas…
“I found a place to live.”
That snapped me out of the fantasy.
“What?” I asked.
“Yeah. I found a place. I’m going to go check it out in a little bit. I appreciate you letting me crash here last night. I don’t want to be in the way though.”
“I thought…”
“I have my own job and my own money,” she said. “I’ll be okay.”
“Okay then,” I said. “You know I’m going with you, right?”
“Seb, no.”
“Uh, yeah,” I said. “You’re not going to look at some place by yourself.”
“Why? Because a woman can’t do those things by herself?”
“I didn’t say that. I’m going to go with you to see where it is and give you some advice. I’ve lived here for a while, April. I know the good parts and the bad ones. That’s all. Plus, if you decide to leave here, I’m going to have to hear from Andy about it.”
“That’s a bad excuse.”
“But it’s a great reason,” I said. “So tell me when you’re leaving.”
“I didn’t say you could come with me, Seb. And how do you know I’m going alone?”
“You have someone else to go with you? You fell in love overnight with someone or something?”
“You never know.”
“Then why don’t you go live with him?” I asked.
April’s cheeks flushed a little. “Fine. Whatever. You can come with me. Just don’t be weird about it. Okay? Don’t make it into a spectacle.”
“We haven’t seen each other in ten years,Auggie,” I said. “You have no idea how I’m going to act.”
April sighed.“That’s the part that scares me the most.”
The guy showingthe apartment was my height and looked like he weighed eighty pounds. He wore a dirty white t-shirt, ripped jeans, and he sucked on a chunk of a pretzel rod, rolling it in his mouth like it was a soggy cigar.
