I dropped the hanger and wiped my hand on my jeans.

“Come on,” she said. “I want to see the rest of the place.”

The kitchen wasn’t all that much better.

The floors had a yellow tint to them.

The sink had a few dishes with some kind of growth on them.

I opened the fridge and there were no shelves.

“I’ll get that worked out for you,” Rick said with a head nod.

“Remind me again of the rent and terms and all that?” April asked.

Rick cleared his throat and finally swallowed the chunk of pretzel in his mouth.

He rattled off numbers and dates and suddenly became a smooth and slick car salesman.

I wandered around the kitchen.

The place was gross.

Beyond gross.

So gross that if Andy found out about this, he’d buy the building just to have it demolished.

I stood at the sliding glass door and ran a hand through my hair.

Out back - along with the tipped over grill with the rust hole in it - there was junk everywhere.

Two lawnmowers with weeds and grass around and out of them.

A rack of old bicycles with rusted frames and crooked tires.

The grass too high to go near them without the risk of being bitten by some kind of animal.

“That’s not bad,” I heard April said.

I turned around. “What isn’t?”

“I can do month-to-month here,” April said.

“As long as I get the deposit,” Rick said.

“When does she get that back?” I asked.

“She doesn’t,” Rick said. “Not on a month-to-month. We have to be reasonable here.”

“You think this place is reasonable?” I asked.

“You have a problem here?” Rick asked.

April stood between Rick and me.

She looked at me.

Stop it,she mouthed to me.
