My jaw tightened.

“Let me have a second to think,” April said.

She walked to a random cabinet and opened it.

She screamed at the top of her lungs as a family of cockroaches scattered up the door, looking for somewhere else to hide in the dark.

Auggie hated bugs.

She kept screaming as she lunged for me.

Next thing I knew, she was in my arms and I was hurrying through the apartment.

Time to get out of there before we caught some disease.

“Wait!” Rick cried out after us. “I need an answer! I have a lot of people who want this place!”

As I carried April in my arms, we looked at each other.

She started to laugh.

“What’s so funny,Auggie?” I growled.

“That place was so gross,” she said.

When we got back to my SUV, I opened the passenger door and put her on her feet.

She blushed. “Thanks for the lift.”

“Hey,” I said. “You’re staying with me. You have no choice. Got it?”

“I don’t take very well to being bossed around,Sebby,” she whispered.

I lowered myself down to her.

Almost as though I was going to kiss her.

She gasped.

“I don’t care, April,” I said. “You’re staying with me. End of conversation.”

She got into the passenger seat with a scowl on her face.

She may have turned into a beautiful, curvy woman…

… but she was still the same pain in the ass as she always was.

My laptop open.

Earbuds in my ears.
