I made my tires squeal as I pulled into the middle school parking lot to drop her off.

Then I looked over at her and told her she was going to kick so much ass that the school was going to fire the science teacher and hire her on the spot. She’d be the youngest teacher on record and make a decent salary.

I made her smile.

I made her blush.

She got a perfect score on that science project.

As I stood in the present day in my kitchen, I wondered where in the hell that story had been hiding all these years. I was amazed I even remembered it.

I moved toward the door and stopped April from leaving.

“Hey,” I said.

“Please, Seb, I don’t want to be late for this. I just have to go.”

“Hey,” I said again.

She looked at me. “What?”

“You’re going to kick so much ass at this gig that they’re going to name the company after you.”

“You know that’s not how it works, right?”

“When I was seven years old, I told a teacher I wanted to be a famous hockey player. That teacher told me I better study hard to get a low-paying job just to make ends meet because a kid like me would never play hockey. Fuck that teacher. And fuck anyone who stands in your way,Auggie.”

“Thanks,Sebby. I guess I’ll see you later?”

I nodded.

April exited the apartment and I caught myself placing my hand on the door.

Feeling aggravated for a few reasons.

Pissed that I didn’t sneak a kiss on April.

You know, just for good luck.

And then I was pissed even more for actually wanting to kiss April.

Detomwas in rare form.

Yelling so loudly, his face turned bright red. Yelling so much that a thick vein ran right down the middle of his forehead.

He climbed up on the bench, blew his whistle, and pointed to Jago.

“Are you a fucking goalie or are you a ghost?”Detomyelled. “Can you fucking stop anything? Air? A fucking beachball? Something?”

Jago threw his mask to the ice and skated toward the bench.

That was my cue to get in on this.

I skated in front of Jago and put a hand to his chest.

“He’s a prick today,” Jago growled.

“Coach Denny’s the best at what he does,” I said. “He knows the season is winding down. Tensions are high. Give the guy everything you’ve got.”
