“Because it grew up,” Atlas growled. “You fucking idiot. The duckling was ugly. The duck wasn’t.” Atlas then looked around. “Am I really debating a fucking duck with Rome?”

“Better to debate a duck than fuck a duck,” Rome said.

“Wow,” Henry said.

“April is not a duck,” I said. “And I didn’t… I didn’t fuck her. Okay? I’m not going to. That’s not how this works. I’m just helping out a friend.”

“The friend between your legs?” Jago asked.

“Really? You’re getting in on this now?” I asked.

“Look, I have to finish this beer, shower, and split,” Atlas said. “Going to meet Hazel at the hospital.”

“That’s great,” I said. “Cheers to that, Atlas. Honestly. What a wild ride.”

“I bet that’s what Sebastian’s best friend’s sister said last night after humping his dick all night,” Rome whispered.

I lunged for Rome and this time, I got my left hand on him.

Henry stepped in, only to take the beer bottle from my other hand.

I thought maybe for a second Rome would beg me not to hit him.

But Rome being Rome… he didn’t care.

He started to laugh.

I had no choice but to hit him.

I openedmy apartment door and without thinking, I blurted out,“Honey, I’m home!”

Thinking it was a stupid kind of funny.

What I didn’t expect to find was April in the kitchen, crying.

Crying.

She looked right at me, tears running down her cheeks.

I battled between the version of April now and the version of April then.

The version of April then?

I would put her in my car and make her take me to whoever made her cry and beat the hell out of them.

Except this was different now.

We were adults.

“Sorry,” she said and spun around.

“Whoa, hold on a second, what’s wrong?”

“Nothing!”

“Okay, that’s a lie. You’re in the kitchen. You’re crying. What happened, April? Who do I have to beat up?”

April looked back at me.
