“Stop saying my name like that,” I growled. “Tell me.”
April pushed at my chest. “You want to know? Huh? You want to know the truth that bad? Fine!” She pushed at my chest again. “I lost my protector! I lost you! You left. And things didn’t change for me right away. Okay? I had to do something. I had to protect myself. You were gone, Seb. You left!”
That shut me up really quick.
I felt like someone punched me in the stomach fifty times.
“Damn,” I whispered.
“Like I said, it doesn’t matter. I’m going to go to bed now. I’m tired. Thanks for the drink. And listening to me. Being there for me.”
She walked toward the couch and I thought about turning around and going after her.
But I knew if I chased her to the couch…
If she thinks she’s going to bring me to my knees again?
I’ll already be on my knees.

I never realized how much April needed me.

APRIL
In frontof the bathroom mirror, I pointed to myself.
To my reflection.
“You’re not going to cry today, you big baby,” I whispered. “This is your job. Yes. It’s frustrating. It’s supposed to be. But you know why you’re really here. Focus on that. You haveSebbyin your corner. You’re safe.”
I took a deep breath and looked at my phone.
Was the new job stressful?
