“Soon,” he said. “Man, it’s happening soon. Hazel is going out of her mind. Nesting.”

“Nesting?” Rome asked. “What is she… a bird?”

Atlas looked back at Rome. “Yes. She’s a bird. That’s what is taking so long to get my daughter out of theNICU. Waiting for the egg to hatch.”

“An egg?” Rome asked. “She’s not…”

It took Rome a second to realize Atlas was being sarcastic.

Rome looked down at his skates.

I elbowed Atlas. “I can’t wait. I mean it.”

“Me too,” Atlas said. “It’s weird seeing the nursery and seeing Hazel not be pregnant and not having our baby at home.”

“Time to think about the game, boys,” Joe said in a deep voice. “This one is for Jago. And our fans. They keep showing up, no matter what.”

“Shit, you sound like the suits upstairs,” Henry said. “Worried about the seats, the fans and spending money.”

The locker room doors opened and we made our way to the ice.

We stood in the tunnel as we were called to the ice one by one.

Jago was second to last.

I was the alleged star of the team so they always announced me last.

I always got the biggest ovation too.

I skated onto the ice, stick in the air.

The first thing I saw was a little dude banging on the glass, wearing my jersey.

I skated over to him and put my glove to the glass and smiled.

He looked back at who I assumed was his father, grinning ear to ear.

I began to skate around the ice, getting my legs ready.

Getting my head straight.

Focusing on the game.

There was something to be said about being the highest paid guy on a shitty team.

To some it looked like I was just there to collect a fat paycheck and nothing more.

In a way, maybe that’s what I was doing.

But over the recent years, the team that was built around me?

We had talent. We had purpose.

I skated toward the bench and that’s when I saw April.

Sitting behind the bench, right next to the tunnel.

Idiot me didn’t even think to look for her.
