“It might be nice to help her,” I say. “If she’s nervous, I’m sure it’ll make her feel better to have another girl there to chat to.”

She takes a deep breath, then nods. “Okay.”

I smile. “You’re sure?”

“You’ll help me with the food?”

“Of course, but I’m sure you won’t need it.”

“Sweet of you to say,” she scolds, “but I think we both know my palate needs some serious training.”

“I’m thinking of suggesting Red’s Rib Shack. They do fantastic platters with ribs, curly fries, corn on the cob, onion rings, and the best coleslaw in the city.”

Her eyes light up. “That sounds great.”

“So I’ll say yes?”

“Yes, okay. I’d like to help Kip find love.”

I laugh. “I don’t think he’s looking for love.”

“I’d like to help him find really, really good sex, then.” She grins, then gives me a curious look. “Can I ask you something?”

“Yeah, sure.”

“Have you ever changed places with Kip? When you’re with a girl, I mean. Pretended you were the other twin.”

I give her a sarcastic look. She lifts her eyebrows, though, and after a moment, I can’t stop my lips curving up.

“You have!” she says with delight.

“No I haven’t.”

“You liar! I can tell.”

“All right, we did. Just once. Not for sex, just kissing.”

“Even so! You’re such rogues. You’ve got to tell me about it now.”

I sigh. “We were only seventeen, and we’d both asked girls out to a party at a friend’s house. Mine was called Emma, and Kip’s was… ah… Laura? Lana? Something like that. We’d all had a few drinks, and he didn’t wear glasses back then, so it was more difficult to tell us apart. Normally we wore different tops, but that day we were both in black T-shirts. We were out in the kitchen, getting another drink, and Emma came out, didn’t see me, and went over to him and kissed him. He just stood there, shocked. At the same time, Laura… Lana? Maybe Linda. Can’t remember. She came in, saw them kissing, obviously thought I was Kip, and came over and kissed me. Kip and I exchanged a glance and laughed, and we spent the rest of the evening with the other’s girl. Just kissing, no sex, I hasten to add, we wouldn’t have done that.”

Luckily Catie seems amused by the incident. “What happened after that evening?”

“I think we both felt a bit guilty, and we didn’t see the girls again. It was the only time it happened, I swear.”

“I have another question.”

“Fuck me. I know I’m going to regret this, but go on, then.”

“Have you and Kip ever shared a girl?”

“Sorry, what?”

“Together, I mean. What do they call it? DJ?”

“Jesus Christ. It’s DP, not DJ—it means double penetration—and no, absolutely not, an ocean of no, a world of no, not in a hundred billion years.”

She giggles. “All right. I was just curious.” She rubs her foot along my thigh above the water line. “You are kinky, so I thought it might be something you’d done.”
