“We can’t wait. See you then.”

“You sure you don’t want a lift back?”

“No, we’ll be fine.”

We wave goodbye and head out into the night.

The moon is a few days off full, and the sky is cloudless, so the gardens are lit with silvery light. We wander back slowly, hand in hand, along the path behind the trees, listening to the sounds of the evening.

“I had such a fun time,” Heidi says. “Thank you so much for asking me to go with you.”

I let go of her hand and put my arm around her shoulder, and she slides her arm around my waist. “You were great. I think they were impressed with your British accent.”

She laughs. “It’s not that different to the Kiwi one so it’s pretty easy to do.”

I pull her toward me and kiss her hair. “Don’t think I’ve forgotten, by the way.”

“About what?”

“The fact that you’re going commando. I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it all evening.”

She giggles. “My work here is done.”

I laugh, stop walking, and pull her into my arms. “Come here.” I slide a hand to the nape of her neck and hold her there as I kiss her. She murmurs something, then lifts her arms around my neck and presses herself against me.

I sigh, giving myself over to the kiss, enjoying the feel of her soft body, and the way she tilts her head to change the angle of the kiss, her tongue darting out to meet mine.

“Mmm…” My murmur of approval lowers to a growl as a spark lights a fuse at the base of my spine, sending fireworks shooting through me. I don’t know how she does it, but she manages to fire me up instantly.

“Are you going to fuck me until my teeth rattle now?” she whispers, lowering her hands to my chest. Through my shirt, she finds my nipples and circles her forefingers over them.

I catch her hands, move them behind her back, and hold them there, gently but firmly. “Whatever the Countess desires,” I tell her, and crush my lips to hers, kissing her for ages, while above us the moon rises slowly, and the stars appear on the black velvet sky.

Chapter Seventeen

Heidi

By the time we stumble into the cottage, I’m breathless and aching with desire for the gorgeous guy who seems intent on kissing me until my brain melts.

I’ve hardly been able to tear my gaze from him all evening. Despite his insistence that he’s just an ordinary guy, he shone this evening, entertaining them all with his teasing wit, playing along with the game, and reducing me to mush when he pulled me to one side and felt me up with such boyish abandon.

I can’t help it—I’m falling for him, even though I keep telling myself I mustn’t, that it’s pointless, and he can’t possibly feel the same way. Every vibe I get from him screams the opposite, and his words,There’s a conversation coming. I think we both know it,tell me he knows how I’m feeling, and that he wants to talk when it’s time.

But right now I can’t think about it because he’s kissing me again, while at the same time he slips a hand beneath my dress and slides his fingers up the outside of my thigh. When he finds my bottom still bare, he sighs and strokes it, slowly walking me backward through the cottage to the bedroom, and closing the door behind us.

“Ooh, it’s warm in here,” I comment, wishing I’d left the door open when we’d left. “Let me turn the fan on.”

“Nuh-uh.” He pulls me back into his arms. “I want you all hot and sweaty.”

“That’s gross, Titus. Oh my God!” He strips off my dress in one swift move, leaving me completely naked.

“Oh yeah.” He lifts me in his arms and tosses me onto the bed. It’s lit by moonlight, and it feels as if I’ve landed in a pool of silver.

“Hard and fast?” I say hopefully, excited to think of him being unable to rein in his passion.

But although he sheds his clothes quickly, he shakes his head. Once he’s naked, he climbs on the bed and stretches out, half lying on me and pinning me there with his weight.

“You’ve got to ring Saxon,” I remember suddenly.
