“I… uh…” I blush scarlet.

“I meant during the evening,” he says with much amusement.

Titus laughs and turns the camera back to himself as I cover my face with a hand. “We’ve been to a murder-mystery evening with Alan Woodridge. It was good fun. Heidi turned out to be the murderer. I should have guessed.”

“She looks like the shady sort.” He grins. “Glad you’re having a good time, and I’m sorry about this.”

“No, it’s okay. Everything all right there?”

“Yeah. I had a long meeting with Mack, Elizabeth, and your team. Mack’s just finished another version of Stork using the adjustments I passed on to him.”

“That’s the nickname we’ve given to the IVF program we’re running at NZAI,” Titus tells me. “How does it look?” he asked Saxon.

“Pretty damn good. We’re going to start the second set of trials next week, if you’re in agreement.”

“Of course.”

“Should give you some more ammunition to persuade Acheron to invest even if you don’t stay.”

“I’m hoping Alan will agree. He genuinely wants this to work, and he’s willing to put his money where his mouth is.”

“It’ll be cool if you get to stay in New Zealand, eh?”

Titus glances at me for a moment, hesitating. Then he looks back at the screen.

“Ah,” Saxon says. “Right.”

I slip out of bed. “I’m going to make us a coffee,” I murmur.

“Okay.”

I feel Titus’s gaze on me as I cross the room and go out into the kitchen, and hear him murmur as he continues his conversation. I don’t know whether he’ll talk to Saxon about me—I know guys don’t tend to confide in each other about this kind of thing—but at least he has the option if I’m not in the room.

The tiles are cool beneath my feet. I cross to the coffee machine and open the box beside it. Ooh, there are rows of coffee pods containing all different types and strengths of coffee. I take two out, slot one in the machine, set it going, then fetch some milk from the fridge.

I think I’m a little bit in love with you, Heidi Rose Huxley.

My lips curve up, and I hum to myself as I pour the milk into a jug. I need to practice mindfulness, I tell myself. Right here, right now, life is pretty sweet.

Chapter Eighteen

Titus

I watch Heidi disappear around the corner and hear her go into the kitchen, and bring my gaze back to Saxon. He’s watching me, a lopsided smile on his lips.

“You okay?” he asks.

I sigh. “Yeah. I’ve been an idiot.”

“I could have told you this would happen. It was obvious from the way you spoke about her.”

I huff a sigh.

He chuckles, then purses his lips. “Is she likely to move back here?”

“I don’t know. She loves England, and she’s all settled here. I can’t ask her to do that.”

“But if she offers?”
