“I don’t know.”

“Did she kiss him?”

His golden brow furrows. “Ah, maybe.”

I look through more photos, stopping at the one of the same older man holding a piece a food up to Laurel’s lips.

Yep. He’s definitely her new husband.

And damn, he’s a lot older than her. If I had to guess – at least twenty years.

I’m not sure what it is about him that turned her head. He doesn’t have a hair out of place, and yes, he still has a full head of brown hair even though he’s older. Must be using some Just for Men or something. His bow tie is straight, suit looks slick, expensive, not like an ill-fitting rental. There’s a large gold watch on his wrist, which confirms it all.

He’s loaded.

And isn’t that a fucking relief?

Knowing Laurel may be just after his money is easier to digest than her falling in love with someone else.

Stupid but true.

“Uh, Bear?”

“Yeah? You did good. These pics are…they’re exactly what I needed.” I feel a million times lighter already. Although, that could be the buzz from the champagne.

“Okay, that’s good,” he says. “But, ah, now I have to take a piss.”

“Then take a piss. Nobody’s around.”

“I can’t go out in the open like this!”

“Why not?”

“I-I don’t know. It’s gross. What if someone comes along and slips in the puddle and gets my piss all over them?”

“That’s unlikely,” I assure him.

“I’m going back inside. They had port-a-potties.”

“You would rather use a port-a-potty than go in the grass? Those things are disgusting.”

“I’m not an animal,” he says as he starts walking toward the gate again.

Well, it’s not like I had a plan for leaving since we’re both probably over the legal drinking limit. Even if we’re not, RJ just got hislicense back, so I don’t want to take any chances with alcohol on our breath.

I pull up the Uber app on my phone, deciding it’ll be best to leave our bikes here and have someone drop us off to get them tomorrow.

I’ve just finished submitting the request when a woman comes hurrying through the gate.

CHAPTER SEVEN

Lyla

I’ve had more than enough celebrating the happy couple for one night. Everyone in town showed up, pretending to be excited for John and Laurel when really, they’re just here for the free food and booze. I don’t think anyone believes for a second that Laurel is in love.

Since I’ve been drinking, I would rather text my dad to let him know I’ve already got a ride home before he tries to assign Thane to do the honors. That’s why I sneak out when my “biker-in-the-closet” date goes to the bathroom.

I’m digging in my purse on the way to the front gate, looking for my phone to pull up the ride app, when I hear fast-approaching footsteps behind me.
