“Stay with me?” I say in surprise. “Like at my house?”

“Keep her close, inside at all times unless you’re with her. You hear me? You need to be armed and ready every second of the dayand night. My men and I will hunt the bastard down, hopefully take him out before he finds her again.”

“Where is she right now?” I ask.

“Still at the hospital. She refused to leave until Thane was out of surgery. Most of my men are with her. I’ll let them know you’re coming to pick her up and give you my number in case there are any problems.”

“Okay,” I agree. I’ll need to ask RJ and my dad, but RJ won’t care if Lyla crashes with us. And my dad, well, he doesn’t come home most nights. I guess he prefers the beds of random women to his own.

“Make sure your brothers know about our peace agreement, just not the details. I don’t want them coming after me if you screw up and get yourself killed.”

Since it’s easier to ask forgiveness rather than permission, I figure I’ll just wait to fill Remy, Colt, and RJ in on what’s going on once Lyla’s by my side.

CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

Lyla

“Coffee?” RJ asks, holding out a cup of coffee toward me. He reminds me so much of Barrett, just a little leaner, a lot blonder.

“Thanks, that’s just what I needed,” I say, giving him a small smile when I take the steaming cup from him.

I was surprised when he showed up with the dark-haired teenager, asking if they could wait with us. I’m not sure how they know Thane, but I wasn’t going to turn them away. I’m glad my dad didn’t object and calmed down his guys. They’re all just worried about who shot Thane and how the surgery is going.

While I’m taking my first tentative sip of coffee, still curled up on one of the waiting room sofas, RJ asks, “Have they given you any new updates?”

I point over to the electronic board on the wall with patient numbers and statuses. “The doctor just told us the surgery went well, and they’re taking him to recovery,” I answer. “He said that when the status update provides a room number on the screen that we can see him two at a time.”

“So, he’s going to be okay?”

“Hopefully.”

RJ nods, then opens his mouth like he wants to ask more but stops himself.

“It’s really nice of you to be here for him. I didn’t know you and Thane were friends.”

“We’re not,” he answers quickly. His gaze shoots to the lanky teenager who came in with him. “Thane kidnapped my prospect.”

“Oh. Then why…”

He shrugs. “I don’t know. Especially since your dad’s friends look like they want to shoot me.”

I wince at his phrasing, the trauma still fresh from this afternoon, but RJ doesn’t notice.

“They’re upset about what happened. Don’t take it personally,” I assure him. “Does Barrett know you’re here?”

“No.”

“Oh.”

“Why?”

“Just wondering, you know, if he had heard about what happened.”

Right now, a hug from Barrett would be really nice. When I’m in his arms, I feel safe. Protected. Treasured.

Which was all in my head, obviously.

It was just great sex for Barrett. At least, I hope it was great for him.
