“They’ll probably be surprised like I was. Maybe a little hurt and angry you didn’t trust them enough to tell them sooner, but they’ll always love you no matter what. That’s why I think you should just tell them.”

“No. There’s no point telling them.”

“Why not?”

“It’s just temporary with Thane. You know, like while he’s staying at the house.”

“If you say so.”

“So, that’s it?” I ask him. “You’re not gonna try to beat me straight or anything?”

“No, RJ. All I’ve ever wanted is for you, Colt, and Bear to be healthy and happy. Who you, uh, have sex with doesn’t change anything. You could’ve died tonight – that’s why you shouldn’t ever live with any regrets.”

“Okay. Thanks,” I tell him. “Can we go home now?”

Remy nods and gives me a small smile. “I’ll go see if the doc’s signed your release papers yet,” he says before he disappears.

CHAPTERTHIRTY-FIVE

Thane

For the first hour back, the Fultons’ house is an active crime scene. Police come in and out, taking photos, asking questions, and examining the dead suspect’s old truck before it finally gets hauled off.

After all the police are gone, Colt, Jordan, Josie, and Avery hang around with Lyla and Bear, waiting for updates on RJ.

I keep trying to call him on his phone, but he doesn’t answer. Since I can’t steal a car to go see him, all I can do is wait here like everyone else. Lyla would give me her car keys if I asked, but not until I tell her why I need them.

I lurk quietly around the house, alternating between the kitchen and the living room to try and catch updates from the brothers.

Finally, a little after midnight, Avery gets a call to come pick up Remy and RJ from the hospital because he’s being released.

From then on, I chew on my fingernails, waiting for them to get back.

Avery steps through the front door first, followed by RJ. His head is wrapped up with a bandage, and he’s swaying on his feet, eyes glassy and dazed. I want to jump out and grab him, but I hold back as his brothers and their girlfriends hug him to welcome him home.

“Oh, RJ! I’m so sorry this happened to you,” Lyla tells him when she wraps her arms around him. “How are you feeling?”

“Sleepy” is his one-word response.

“Is he allowed to sleep with a concussion?” Bear asks Remy like RJ isn’t capable of answering for himself.

“I offered to stay here tonight, but he said he would be fine. I did set his phone’s alarm to go off every few hours so he can make sure his symptoms aren’t getting worse,” Remy says as he removes the device from his pocket and puts it in RJ’s hand.

Oh, shit.

If Remy had his phone, then he must have seen all my phone calls.

He doesn’t so much as glare in my direction or do anything to make me think he’s suspicious, though.

“So, everything checked out with his head?” Colt asks his older brother. Again, it’s like they don’t think RJ can answer the question.

“He’s got some memory loss, but the doc said that’s normal for a concussion, and all of his memories should come back eventually. Well, other than right when he got his head busted up.”

Memory loss? Maybe that’s why the brothers are talking like RJ isn’t in the room.

“Good. That’s good. Glad you’re okay, bro,” Colt tells RJ. Grabbing his shoulder, he guides him to the hallway. “Let’s get you to bed.”

I wait not so patiently for the brothers to get RJ comfortable, and then everyone says their goodbyes before they finally leave, and Lyla and Bear close themselves up in his room.
