“Hey.” He looks over at me for a second before returning to his chore. When he does a double take, his eyes lower to my duffle.

“What’s going on? You’re leaving?”

“Ah, yeah. I’m going with Lyla.”

“Where?’

“Apparently, we’re headed to Atlanta, Georgia.”

“What? Why?”

“She seems to think she and Bear are over. Guess she wants a change of scenery to get over him.”

“How long will you be gone?”

“No clue.”

“So, that’s it? You’re just up and leaving?”

“Yeah. Sorry.”

“Oh, fuck you!” RJ shouts, looking furious, just like the man he was when we first met, the man who hated me.

“You already did,” I remind him.

It’s the last thing I get to say before Lyla blows past me down the hall, heading to the front of the house.

“Lyla, wait,” Barrett calls after her, but she’s already out the front door.

“Sorry, man,” I tell him. Since I can’t say anything else to RJ with his brother standing there, I go after Lyla without even risking another glance at the gorgeous blond man.

“We making a quick getaway?” I ask when I catch up to her outside, my side aching from the extra weight on my shoulder.

“Yes, sorry.”

“It’s fine. I’m ready.”

“Are you sure you want to come with me? Are you well enough?” she asks as she opens the driver’s door of her car.

“I’m good,” I say as I make my way to the passenger side.

“Lyla, wait!” Bear calls out from the front porch. “Don’t take off like this,” he adds as he runs down the steps and heads for the driver’s-side window.

Lyla goes right for the kill shot while I’m throwing my duffle into the back seat. “It’s over, Barrett. Now I know why you didn’t want any strings. I went from being a pity fuck to a mission for you to complete. Which is fine.” When he opens his mouth, she raises her palm to hold off his objection. “Because I never believed it was real for a second.”

“Lyla…”

She cranks the engine and turns the radio up to drown out the poor man’s voice as I finally slip into the passenger seat.

Before she even finishes backing out of the driveway, there are tears racing down her cheeks.

My own heart is breaking, but I refuse to cry about it right now. Later. I can cry later.

“Did my…did Isaac put you up to staying here, keeping an eye on me?” Lyla asks.

“No.” It’s not an actual lie. Isaac told me to stay with her while she was with Barrett, and she’s no longer with Barrett, so I’m going with her on my own.

“If you’re lying…”
