Not even ten minutes later, I tried to apologize for being a dick.
Now, after more tries than I can count, I realize apologizing isn’t gonna happen. Either Thane didn’t pay the phone bill, is somewhere without service, or, worst of all, he’s blocked my number. How do I know? Because I keep getting a red message saying, “Not delivered,” when I send a text, and calls say the customer is unavailable.
“Hey, I’m heading out,” Bear announces from my bedroom door.
“Okay.”
“I may not be back for a few days.”
Sitting up to see him, I notice he’s got a backpack hanging over his shoulder. “Huh? Why? Where are you going?”
“Atlanta.”
“Oh. Oh! You’re riding down alone? On your bike?”
“Yeah,” he answers as if it’s obvious. “Why? You want to come with me?”
“Yes,” I reply, then cringe. “No. I don’t know.”
“Well, make your mind up!”
“You’re going to see Lyla?”
“No shit, Sherlock.”
“Wh-what if she doesn’t want to see you?”
“That’s a chance I have to take.”
“Have you tried to call her?”
“Called and texted. Fucking audio message keeps telling me ‘the customer is unavailable,’ and none of my texts are being delivered.”
That’s the exact same thing that’s happening to me. “Maybe he’s – I mean, she, they, are somewhere that doesn’t have service.”
“Lyla’s supposed to be in the biggest city in Georgia! They have plenty of cell towers down there!”
“Okay, well, don’t yell at me because she left you.”
“Sorry,” he says as he bows his head and rubs his brow. “I just…I’m lost without her, you know?”
“Yeah, I know,” I respond since I’m familiar with that same sensation.
“Well? Are you coming or not?”
Do I really want to drive…however many hours on my bike just to get rejected by Thane? No way.
“No. Unless you need me to keep you company, watch your back?”
“I’ll be fine.”
“Okay. Then be safe and keep in touch.”
“Okay,” he says. “See ya.”
“Good luck!” I call out to him.
If he can convince Lyla to come back, then maybe Thane will come back to Virginia too. I wouldn’t mind confronting him on my own turf, just not in another state with my brother there to see me look like a fucking fool when he rejects me.
