“So, I have that address for Thane,” Lyla says from behind me.

Food? Who needs food?

“Yeah?” I ask as I slam the fridge door closed to turn around and face her. “What is it?” My heart races in my chest, but I tell myself to play it cool. I’m pretty sure I failed based on the way she arches a red eyebrow at me.

“He asked me to promise I wouldn’t give it to you.”

Son of a bitch! A boulder slams into my stomach hearing that he doesn’t want to see me. I shouldn’t care. He made it clear he didn’t want to see me when he left for Georgia with Lyla and stopped taking my calls. Why I thought he would’ve changed his mind just because he was back in town and maybe horny, I’m not sure.

“I didn’t technically promise him, though,” Lyla says quietly.

“What do you mean?”

“He wanted me to promise, but I didn’t because he didn’t give me an actual reason for why I shouldn’t tell you. So, here’s the deal. I’ll give you his address if you tell me why you want to see him.”

“You want me to tell you why?”

“Why do you want to see Thane?”

“I told you – I want to apologize.”

“When I mentioned that to him, he didn’t seem to think you had anything to apologize for.”

“He didn’t?”

“Nope. So, can I have the truth?” she asks as she goes to sit down in one of the chairs at the dining table. It’s the chair Thane liked to use when he was staying here.

“The truth?” I repeat.

“About why you are so desperate to go see him.”

“The truth,” I say again as I go over and lower my ass into one of the dining chairs. “Ah, that’s hard to do.”

“Then I can’t give you the address. I can’t break a semi-promise I made to my friend for anything less than the full and honest truth.”

“Okay, the truth…” I wet my lips, searching for the words. “The truth is, I think I may love him.”

Lyla gasps and slaps her palm over her gaping mouth, her eyes as big as saucers. “You love him?” she whispers, the words muffled behind her palm, which she finally drops.

“I said I may. I may…”

“Love him? Oh my god, RJ!” she exclaims before she lunges over the table to throw her arms around my neck. When she releases me, she says, “I thought something was going on between you two when he was staying here, but I wasn’t sure. You two were good at hiding it.”

“Really? Because I don’t think I want anyone else to know just yet, not until I talk to him.”

“I swear, RJ, I won’t tell a soul. Not even your brother. I love Bear, and I don’t want to keep anything from him, but this is your secret to tell when you’re ready, okay?”

“Okay. Thanks,” I tell her with a sigh of relief since I didn’t even think about her telling Bear when I blurted it all out. “So, now will you give me his address?”

“Yes, because love is worth breaking that semi-promise, especially since I think he loves you too, RJ.”

“You do?”

“Thane was a sulky mess the entire time we were in Atlanta. I thought he was lonely after he admitted to me that he was gay, so I tried to get him to go to some of the gay bars down there…”

“He went to gay bars? Did he hook up with guys?”

“No, no. I tried to convince him to go out, but he refused.”
