“You sure we should go in?” he asks.

“Yeah. There are plenty of chairs. They can ask us to leave if they want.”

“Or just throw us out. Literally.”

He follows me inside, and we take the two empty seats closest to the door. At least we can make a quick escape if anyone comes for us.

I hate waiting around, unable to do anything. It sucks. All I can do is stare at the clock on the wall, watching the minutes tick by slowly.

What sucks even more than waiting is when my brother bursts into the waiting room a little while later.

“Sorry. Just looking for Lyla,” he says as he turns around to walk back out. That’s when his eyes land on us. “RJ? Jordan? What are you two doing here?”

“Ah.” The two of us stand up, and I look to Jordan for a quick explanation. Thankfully, the kid comes through. “We were looking for you. We figured you would come by to check on Lyla, so we came over as soon as we closed up the shop.”

It’s a decent lie. He’s better at this than I expected.

“Oh,” he mutters. “Well, I didn’t even know Thane was shot until a few minutes ago.”

“I thought Lyla called you,” I bluff. I haven’t seen her on the phone with anyone.

“She didn’t. Where is she?”

“One of her dad’s guys took her to Thane’s room,” I tell him.

“She’s with one guy? One guy?”

Jeez. What’s his problem? “They only allow two to visit.”

“You could’ve all gone up and stayed in the hallway!” he exclaims. “She’s in danger. Fuck. What room is he in?”

“Two-ten,” Jordan answers. Guess he could figure out the numbers and shit on the board.

“Thanks,” Bear says before he takes off down the hall.

Jordan and I are right behind him, mostly because I wanted to go see Thane but also because it’s probably not safe for Barrett to be running around here alone since Isaac wants him dead.

Instead of taking the elevator, he takes the stairwell.

“Wait for us,” I call out, and he holds the door open for us.

“Hurry up!” he snaps.

As soon as we walk out the door on the second floor, Lyla steps out of a patient’s room.

“Lyla!” Barrett calls out when she starts toward the elevator on the other end of the hallway.

She spins around, her eyes widening when she sees us. Or, probably more likely, when she sees my brother.

“Barrett?”

“Are you okay?” Barrett asks when they meet each other in the middle of the hall.

Instead of giving him a verbal response, she throws her arms around his neck. Her lips slam down on his a second later.

I’m busy reading room numbers but hear Jordan call out, “Over here!” while holding open a door.

When the two of them are off doing who knows what, I find the right room and stop inside with Jordan right behind me.
