He cares how I feel?
“Still pretty painful when I move around, which sucks.”
“Yeah, that does suck.”
Does he mean that? Why would he say it if he didn’t? Maybe he wishes I was in more pain.
“Lyla…Lyla’s been a big help. She brings me food. She’s the reason I’m here. I didn’t ask her to bring me here.”
Wow. I sound like a blubbery idiot.
I’m about to blame my rambling on the drugs when RJ says, “Well, it’s the least she can do since it’s her fault you got shot.”
He blames Lyla? Weird.
“It wasn’t her fault someone is trying to kidnap her.”
“Guess not,” he says, followed by a sigh. “Anyway, I’ll leave you alone so you can sleep or whatever.”
“Okay. Ah, thanks for letting me stay or whatever.”
Great, now he’ll think I’m copying him.
“Bear didn’t really give me much of a choice.”
“Right. I figured as much. He’s just doing it to get in Lyla’s panties.”
“Exactly,” RJ says, and I get a little light-headed when a slight grin appears on his gorgeous face.
Why would he smile at me like that if he hates me?
When he turns to leave, I yell, “Why did you come to the hospital?”
He freezes midstep, but he doesn’t turn around or look over his shoulder when he says, “Ah, what?”
“I heard you came by.”
“So?”
“So, why did you do that?”
“My brother was checking on Lyla.”
“Yeah, I know he was there too, but she said you got there before him.”
“Don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“You don’t?”
“Nope.”
Huh. Why would he lie about being there unless he doesn’t want me to know the real reason? He hates me and wants to hurt me for coming on to him so strong after he made it perfectly clear that he was straight.
“Wait!” I yell to stop him again. Mostly I want to try and smooth things over with the guy, but also, I guess it’s nice to have company other than a guilty Lyla. “I owe you an apology.”
“For what?” he asks, now looking at me over his shoulder. “Kidnapping Jordan?”
“That and…look, RJ, I’m sorry about the other night. I shouldn’t have…I won’t ever touch you again, okay? Can we just forget about it? You can punch me if you want.”
