“I’m not gonna punch a cripple.”

“I really wish people would stop calling me that.”

“Rain check for when you’re healthy?”

He wants a rain check on punching me? “Sure, fine. So, we’re good now?”

“Yeah. We’re good,” he says before he walks away.

CHAPTERNINETEEN

RJ

“Goddammit!” I exclaim when the battery I was carrying across the garage slips out of my hands. It hits my knee on the way to the ground, then rolls down into the fucking pit.

“You okay, man?” Jordan asks when he comes into the garage to check on me.

“I’m fine!”

“You don’t sound fine.”

“I just dropped and ruined a fucking battery.”

“So that’s all that’s bothering you today?” he asks.

“Yes. No.”

“What’s up?”

“Thane was released from the hospital yesterday.”

“Oh. That’s good, right?”

“He’s staying at my house!”

“He’s crashing with you?”

“No, not me. Lyla asked Bear to let him stay.”

“Well, once he’s recovered, it’ll give you easy access to him to find out if kissing him was a fluke or not…”

“No. That’s not going to happen again.”

“Why not?”

“It’s just not!”

Fuck. I’m not sure why I’m taking my anger out on Jordan. It’s not his fault that Thane took back his offer. Even worse than the rejection was his apology, like he regretted it all.

“I’ve never seen you so…” Jordan starts before I glare at him, making his mouth snap shut.

“So what? Go ahead and say it,” I huff as I take a seat on one of the rolling stools.

“I’ve never seen you get so emotional.”

“Fuck off.”

“No, RJ, I didn’t mean that as an insult. You just seem different lately. The past few days…”
