“No. She died three years ago.” I twist around to show him my left arm, the black flowers with a yellow butterfly in the middle of them.

“The butterfly is for her?” RJ asks.

“Yeah. And the dead flowers. I think she loved me in her own way, even though she destroyed everything she touched.”

“My mom left when I was little. I don’t even remember what she looked like.”

“That sucks. Your dad raised you?”

“No. My dad worked, and Remy raised us,” RJ explains. “Did you know your dad?”

“Nope. Not even his name.”

“Damn. So now you’re like an orphan?”

“Yeah. The Devil Hounds were my first family,” I admit. “And I’ve only seen or heard from two of them since I’ve been here.”

“They probably just don’t want to cause problems with the Savage Kings.”

“Maybe,” I reply, even though I think it’s more than that. Isaac is pissed. I let him down, and the rest of the guys follow his lead.

“They’re probably just busy.”

“Right.”

“So, we’re all going out tomorrow night,” RJ says out of the blue.

“Oh yeah?” I ask, trying to hide my disappointment.

“Yeah. My brothers always spend birthdays together at Greer’s.”

“Greer’s?”

“The local bar.”

“Whose birthday is it?”

“Mine.”

“Yours?” I say in surprise. Then I remember seeing his birthdate on his driver’s license and noticing it was coming up soon.

“Yeah. It’s no big deal.”

“You’re gonna be twenty-four.”

“How did you know?” RJ asks.

Leaning over to the mostly empty end table, I pull it open and grab my wallet. Inside, I pull out his ID and his credit card. “Happy birthday,” I tell him when I offer both to him.

“Thanks,” he says. “Even though I already canceled my card and ordered a new ID.”

“Sorry about that night.”

“Bear and I shouldn’t have been at the fairgrounds. If we hadn’t, then we wouldn’t have to listen to him and Lyla going at it all night.”

“Yeah, but then I wouldn’t be here either,” I point out.

“Oh, right. Then I guess I’m glad Bear and I crashed the wedding reception.”
