“I just can’t wait until it’s all over,” she whispers.

“How are you feeling about this plan of Barrett’s?” I ask as she gets out the pancake ingredients and throws them together.

Looking up from the mixing bowl, she smiles. “You meanmyplan?”

“Your plan. Of course you would insist on being bait. I didn’t think Barrett would ever do something so risky.”

“It’s the only way to get this guy out of hiding so he can be arrested.”

“Arrested? You think your father or Barrett is gonna be satisfied with him in handcuffs?”

“What do you mean?” she asks as she stirs up the batter.

“You know exactly what I mean. You won’t be safe until he’s dead.”

“Maybe it won’t come to that.”

“Maybe not,” I say, even though I know the guy is dead as soon as he shows his face near Lyla.

Neither of us says much else as she pours the batter onto the griddle and flips the cakes.

When we’re sitting down at the table to eat, Lyla asks, “How has RJ been?”

“What do you mean?”

“He’s not being a dick to you?”

“Ah, no. Definitely not.”

The truth is, I think RJ may be my favorite person in the world. Not just because of his mouth either. I like sharing a bed with him all night. Being close to him makes me happy. Talking to him and watching movies together between orgasms, it’s like we’ve made our own routine these past few weeks. A routine that is bound to end soon. And then what? RJ and I agreed it was just while I was staying here. Neither of us can risk his brother or a member of the Devil Hounds catching one of us sneaking out of the other’s place at night or even hanging out in public. It would raise too many questions. Just because Isaac is letting Lyla stay here and screw the Savage King doesn’t mean he’s suddenly okay with their club. He’s using him, of that I’m certain. I just don’t know if it’s to keep Lyla safe and away from the town where the kidnapper found her or if there’s more to it. For all I know, the Kings and Hounds could be at war as soon as Lyla’s safe.

“So, how are things going with Barrett?” I ask.

“Great. Why?”

“Just wondering. I didn’t think your father approved of you and him together.”

“Well, I don’t care what my father approves. But it doesn’t matter since he changed his mind about Barrett. He’s a good guy who totally got screwed over by my sister.”

“You don’t think it’s odd Isaac is letting you stay here or that none of the Devil Hounds have been by to check on you?”

Lyla’s fork freezes. “Oh. You haven’t seen any of your friends?”

“Nope. Not since I got here and they brought my things over.”

“Well, that’s probably because my dad is worried the kidnapper could follow them here to me and you while you’re still recovering.”

Wow. That sort of makes sense. And here I was hoping Isaac was pushing me out of the club so I could maybe have a chance of continuing to see RJ.

But that’s stupid.

RJ is just enjoying the carefree, no-strings-attached sex. Or at least the sexual things we do with each other since there hasn’t been any actual penetrative sex. It would be crazy for me to want to walk away from the club because we’re horny and living under the same roof for now.

RJ and I are just temporary.

It sucks, but I know it’s true. And wanting more is only going to get my hopes up so they can be crushed.
