Page 4 of Tearing You Apart

Maybe I could grab him in a headlock and throw him through the window? Thirty-seven floors would definitely be a death sentence. Though, I would have to break through the glass, and he could end up dragging me down with him. Our kickboxing instructor had warned us never to go for a few key places in the body. Jazz was filming in Malaysia, so I hadn’t practiced for months, but I still had enough stretch that I could get my foot into his throat.

Every time Max spoke, my blood boiled. I never wanted to hear his smoky voice again. I refused to listen to his music. I didn’t want to remember all the ways he’d told me he loved me. Now I was soaking in his voice like a sun-starved houseplant, deliberately asking him questions just to let that deep purr roll over me.

Lucy rang through after an hour to check we were alright. It shouldn’t have taken this long, but I wanted to go over every detail with a fine-toothed comb. There wasn’t one aspect of Bunny’s material life I hadn’t covered by the time we reached ten o’clock. If Bunny left him, Max Rider wasn’t getting shit.

Max

God, she was gorgeous. I’d forgotten how stunning Cat was. The contempt radiating from her made her even sexier. She was electric, pulling me in with her disdain. The way she glared at me, how her fingers clenched each time I spoke, even the fake smile she had plastered on her face. What I wouldn’t give to press her into her desk and see how she moaned.

Her hair was still that thick, glossy wave of chestnut that I used to curl around my fingers while I slid into her from behind; long eyelashes, flashing blue eyes, and sharp cheekbones leading down to gorgeous lips, painted deep red to match her suit. And that suit…Christ, it fit her perfectly, accentuating her curved hips and waist. The black silk shirt called to me, buttoned down to reveal a taste of cleavage and frame her slender neck, telling me to fuck off while begging to be fucked.

I had so many questions, but I couldn’t ask them with Bunny harping on beside me.

Since she’d told me about Cat two days ago, I’d been on fire. I was pissing off the rest of the band by skipping the recording session this morning, but there was no alternative. I couldn’t miss this chance. I’d been trying to get to the same parties and events as Cat for years, but I was never moving in high enough circles. Bunny was my ticket to her world, the upper crust of London society.

Even looking at her face was a punch to the fucking gut.

I had to hurry this along. I needed to talk to Cat before she got rid of us. I felt like an accessory here. We just had to sign a bit of paper. How hard could it be?

“Darling?” I took Bunny’s hand, cutting her off mid-gush. She was more excited about the wedding than the actual marriage, which was understandable, given the news coverage we were going to get. “Perhaps you and Catherine could finish this over lunch? I need to get back to the studio.” Rolling her name over my tongue was delicious, especially when she shot me a thinly disguised glower. “Catherine, is there anything more we need to discuss?”

She clenched her jaw and pursed her lips before she replied. “No. Either you both sign it now or take it home to review. It’s up to you.” She cocked her head and frowned, looking at Bunny. “Though I think Theodore would want to see it before you sign it.”

Bunny’s dad was the reason we were here in the first place. The idea of all his assets going to someone like me had him spinning in his grave, and he wasn’t even dead. Yet.

“Bun, why don’t you make another appointment for next week, and we can have a proper catch-up over lunch?” Cat gave her an easy smile.

I needed to get in on that. I wasn’t missing any opportunity to see her. I’d already gone ten empty years of pulling myself apart, trying to deal with life without her. If it were up to me, I’d chain myself to Cat now so she couldn’t escape.

I’d planned to meet her today, just to see if she was happy and living well, and then leave. As soon as I saw her, that plan was chucked right out the window. The moment our hands met, a spark ignited, and now all I could think about was how to touch her again.

We both rose, watching each other from opposite sides of the desk: predator and prey. Cat stood above me in those striking heels, and I thanked God for my long shirttails as she looked down on me. My cock was ready to go. Her eyes were made up dark and sultry, just how I liked them. As she moved towards us, I remembered how she used to climb down my body to reach my cock, watching me with her gorgeous eyes as I came in her mouth.

I wanted to hold her, pull her to my body like I used to, feel her shape again, her scent, her taste, make her purr.

Instead, I held out a polite hand. She looked at it bluntly before taking it.

“So nice to meet you, Mr Rider.” Her voice was stiff.

I ran my thumb over her knuckle and her nostrils flared, her grip hardening.

“Please.” I squeezed her hand, smiling. “Call me Max.”

For a second, I heard her gasp in my mind: a memory of the times she used to cry my name as she came.

Her lips curved into a sneer. “I’d rather not.”

She let go, her attention returning to Bunny. I couldn’t leave this room without asking her why she’d left, how she was, and what she’d been doing with her life.

Had she ever thought of me? Did she even care anymore? Did she remember how deeply I would push into her in the middle of the night when we fell into bed, drunk and horny, or how we held each other in the morning and laughed and whispered and kissed the hours away? Did she remember how much we loved each other?

Bunny started chatting again. Cat was an expert at dealing with her, gently ushering us to the door while Bunny raved about dress designs. The last minute of them saying goodbye felt like being dragged through a grinder. Tension was building inside me, and I was seconds away from shouting at Bunny to leave. She needed to stop talking and get out of the room so I could be alone with Cat.

Bun eventually ended her babbling. “I guess Maxxy and I will head out and leave you to it?”

I needed to stay and get space to look at the woman who dropped me like I was nothing the second she thought we wouldn’t make it.

Bunny was giving Cat a parting air kiss when I stepped in. “Bun Bun, I want to chat with Catherine about something real quick. Wedding stuff, you know? Why don’t you book our next appointment, and I’ll meet you outside?”
