I watched as Andrei took the keys to the handcuffs from Nkosi and opened the door to the back.

“Turn your hands toward me,” he instructed.

I felt the cuffs fall off my wrists.

“Get in the driver’s seat,” he said, this time with a strong groan. I looked up at his face and noticed the sweat on his forehead. My eyes dropped to his blood-covered hand pressing against the shirt on his chest.

“You’re shot!” My panic-filled voice shook.

“I’m fine,” he groaned, “but I need you to drive.”

In a matter of seconds, I jumped to my feet and grabbed Officer Nkosi’s lifeless body to pull it out of the car. Its heavy body dropped to the ground as I reached over his friend’s dead body to open the passenger side for Andrei. Quickly, I pushed the other dead body out of the car right before Andrei got in.

“Drive,” Andrei groaned. “Now.”

My hands trembled as I hit the gas pedal hard.

We peeled off into the night. I couldn't think straight. Two cops dead. Now I was fleeing in their vehicle.

“Your wound,” I stuttered. He had to be injured badly.

“Just drive to the highway. The bullet went through, but I might pass out. I need to navigate us back to the cabin before that.”

I drove madly into the night, just glad to put miles between us and the corpses we were leaving behind.

“Were those real cops?”

“What does it matter,” he said firmly as he attended to his wound. He took off the dirty coat and hat, then took out a handkerchief from his pocket and pressed it hard against the wound on his chest.

“Take the next exit and stop at the closed Chinese restaurant. I parked over there. We need to change cars. The cops can trace us in the cruiser.” Andrei took in a deep breath and shook his head.

I glanced at him. “The same place you parked the night you helped me?”

He nodded.

Without thinking, I reached over and pressed my hand against the piece of clothing he was holding to his wound, giving it a bit more pressure to staunch the blood. He was going to make it. Heneededto.

Up ahead, I saw the restaurant and his black SUV parked by the roadside. I pulled the cruiser right next to it.

“Wipe the steering wheel and door handle on your side,” Andrei urged as he used the sleeve of his shirt to wipe down his side. My hands shook like miniature earthquakes as I wiped everything down and jumped out of the cruiser. Andrei was already running toward his SUV’s passenger side. I circled around the hood and hopped in.

In no time, we were back on the road again, driving at ninty miles per hour. I was a good driver, but driving around Durban at night at those speeds was a totally different story. And driving with a shot man next to me, who I realized I fucking cared for a lot, was ten thousand times harder. Andrei needed help fast. If I couldn't get him help soon, he was at serious risk of bleeding out.

“Where do you want me to go? The cabin might be compromised,” I urged.

“What?” Andrei wrinkled his sweaty forehead even higher.

“There was a man there this morning. I didn’t stick around to find out who.”

Andrei twisted his face in pain. “Fuck... that’s why you ran. It was the owner. He stops by the cabin every month to collect the rent in cash.”

“What? You should have told me!”

So all of this was for nothing?

“Well, excuse me,” Andrei countered harshly. “I was busy creating a new life for you. And I’m not used to people fucking living with me.”

I bit my lip. Hard. “I’m sorry...”
