“Don’t be sorry. I didn’t mean to kill the mood.”

I stared at the trail ahead. Our conversation somehow felt like confession time now.

“Soon,” I carefully said. “I will have to change locations.”

It sounded as bad as it was.

“You... or... we?” she asked, staring at the path as well. I stopped walking and turned to face her.

“Elise... there is no we. There can’t be. It’s not you—”

“Please don’t give me that shit,” she interrupted me harshly. This was the first time she actually did that. Defy me. It felt amazing to see that she wasn’t afraid of me—at all. Maybe there was just one person on this planet who didn’t see a monster in me.

“If you thought I expected a ring and a house with a white picket fence after two weeks of hot sex, then let me put you at ease. I wanted this as much, if not even more, than you did, and I knew all along what it was and what it wasn’t. But...” She briefly bit her lip and searched for words. “But I was hoping that you would let me tag along for a bit. At least until my husband loses sight of me again.”

I ran my hand through my hair as I stared into her eyes. I wanted to tell her that she wouldn’t have to worry about her husband anymore soon as I would kill that son of bitch for what he’d done to her. But with the CIA on my heels, that would need to wait until the US was somewhat safe for me again. There was also the problem that once that bastard turned up dead, she would be a prime suspect in his murder. The beaten wife on the run. So the less she knew, the better.

After that asshole was finally dead, she most likely didn’t want to be with me any more anyway. I was almost certain that whatever this was between the two of us was nothing more than her way of looking for protection. And by God, who could blame her?

“I’ll find a safe place for you and make sure that he’ll never hurt you again. That’s all you need to know,” I promised her.

“I disagree,” she said, crossing her arms. “I’d like to know a little more than that, as it’s my life on the line here.”

I frowned. “It’s one of them,” I countered. “But if you need more details, then I can tell you the plan. I’ll pick up your the passport I had made for you and then I’ll let you choose a city from a list of places in Europe.”

“Europe?” she wondered.

I nodded. “I assume your husband is well established financially. It’s very expensive to locate and pay corrupt cops, even in South Africa. But for it to work, you need a country that struggles with corruption to begin with. In a place like Switzerland, your husband won’t be able to find you that easily. The hardest part is to get you fake citizenship. Those European passports are hell to fake and there are only a handful of people in the world who possess the skill to do it right. But I was able to get it done. A guy I know owed me a big favor.”

She stared at me, her lips parting as she took in every word I just said. “And I assume your destination won’t be... what was it again? Switzerland?” She sounded angry.

“No. It won’t.”

If our lives were different, if the CIA wasn’t after me, then sure, why the hell not. Have some more fun, see where it goes. But as things stood, I could barely escape on my own. If the CIA was to arrest her along with me, they would use her to get to me. And the CIA was an enemy that would make her wish her husband back any time of day. How could I do that to her?

“I know who you are, Andrei,” she suddenly said, narrowing her eyes at me. “You’re the Eagle. The man they call a monster.”

She almost said it as if to hurt me. And strangely enough, out of her mouth, it did. I suspected as much, with her going through my things, but that was a risk I was aware of when I saved her and took her in.

“So you’re not even denying it?”

I just stared at her.

“Good. Well, then, let me tell you that I don’t care what trouble you’re in, and I’m not afraid of whoever is after you.”

“You should be,” I said. “It will probably take years or decades until I can sit in a restaurant without worrying a sniper might take me out or that someone is trying to catch me so they can torture me for information that doesn’t belong to them. If that’s not a life to be afraid of, then what is? One does not just get to quit the business I’m in and live happily ever after, Elise. You on the other hand still have a chance. I don’t. The math on that is simple. You’ll go to Europe. Alone. Period.” I said the last part in a way that left no room for buts and ifs.

For a moment, we just stood there. Then she started walking again. “Well, let’s go and get the passport then, so we can both be on our separate ways.”

She walked ahead, but then briefly turned to throw me an angry gaze with her stunning eyes.

Every time I look at you, darling, I feel like I can't breathe. I can't see anything else. It's like everything disappears when you’re around, and I just want to stay in that fantasy.

A strange tingle rushed through my fingertips all the way into my cock. All I wanted was to run up to her and pull her into my arms. Apologize. Kiss her and promise her I would never let her go again. Then I’d fuck her senseless right here on the grassy ground.

But my mind was made up. Her safety came first.

With a painful knot in my throat, I started walking, staring at her walking ahead of me the whole way back to the cabin.
